If you are looking for live action and non anime then try picking up Azumi. It is an older movie but it was awesome.

Well I haven't seen a Japanese movie for some time but I think the anime movies are pretty good.

I really like Shunji Iwai movies like Swallowtail Butterfly that rainmountain mentioned as well as Hana and Alice, and April Story. Josie, Tiger and the Fish is really good too.

    Battle Royale

    Suicide Circle
    The Bird People in China
    Mushishi

(just to name a few in various genres. There are many more good ones, but it is difficult to recommend something without knowing what you usually like)

I thought this film was interesting but I got a little motion sickness watching it so I gave up trying to finish it.

I second Death Note and Battle Royale. I don't really watch much Japanese films.. I heard Paprika and Tekkonkinkreet is good if you're into animated films. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was okay too.

I also wached the girl who leapt through time, and I think it's good. Another animated movie I like is Millennium Actress.

As a real movie I reccomand "Kamikaze Girls". This movie is pretty much fun. With these two really different girls... One with Rokoko-style and the other from the cycle gang. Great friendship!

If your looking for action I recommend Zatoichi (2003) and Dororo. They're both pretty good action movies.

I really liked waterboys and swing girls. They're both by the same director.

As far as drama movies go, 'Be With You' is definitely worth watching.

I thought Battle Royale was good, but not great. Overrated imo.
