I got my first car this summer waaay after all my friends got their first car. It doesn't matter when you have your first car, as long as you need it. Anyhow.

My first car was an 1989 Honda Accord EX-R coupe. It was pretty bad. The exhaust pipe was leaking and the power steering was on the verge of giving up. this car lasted me for a month and over 3000km of travel. It ended up that cylinder 3 had 0psi compression, fuel tank was leading and power steering was almost done.
Lesson 1 learned: Don't buy the first car you see.

My second car was in September 2007 for school, It was an 1992 Acura Legend sedan. It happened to be very nice and clean. Plus, it was a friend's dad's old car. He wasn't using it and it was left outside for 2 years. Yikes! Near November 07, the tank was punctured, the power steering was dead, and so was the steering. I ended discovering that the car was rotten from the bottom. Rust everywhere on the working parts.

Lesson 2 learned: Don't buy a car from a friend, thinking it would be better. AND Don't buy a car that was sitting pretty for too long. Cars rot. Literally.

I did a few months of BMW ( Bus Metro Walk) then I found a real BMW. 1990 525i 5 speed. It was a real gem. Bought it off a stranger in a forum. Test drove it and agreed on the deal. Then, everything went downhill from that point. Many things weren't working. The car was mounted on very sporty Bilstein coilovers. Many parts were getting worn out at excessive rate. I've had enough of cars falling apart now: I spent over 2.5 G's fixing every little detail on the car. I yet have to pick it up on Monday.

Lesson 3 learned: Get a mechanical inspection done before buying a car.

Oh. Unless daddy and mommy are paying, don't go for European cars. They are expensive to maintain. Unfortunately, I have developed an expensive taste...
There is a reason why many teens goes for the popular Honda Civic. They are really cheap to maintain, quite reliable and has a somewhat tuning potential if you want to go faster. don't go with VW's they are the worst sheets of metal you can get along with American cars.

edit: I never told my parents about my cars. I don't plan on neither as I am paying everything myself and I don't want them to worry. They once considered getting me some POS Pontiac Sunfire. Maybe we had a little difference in views of the term " car". I brought my dad to see a Nissan Skyline R32 sitting at an importer and he didn't like my race-orientated taste neither. They sent me an ultimatum of Sunfire or nothing. I gladly said nothing. Although my Acura was sitting in a garage at that time...

vw isn't that bad.. american cars are the worst to be honest.. my parent owns a 2000 ford windstar, has tons of problems right now... too lazy to fix it.. everytime we take it to get it fix.. 2-5 days later.. engine light back on.. so gay with american cars...

fiat punto for me....which suckeddd BIG time....
it had no power steering so was a killer when i tried to parallel park >.<

but guess it was an okies 1st car la...

  19. are you guys out of your minds? lol granted some american cars suck shit, but the american cars my family have owned held up way longer than other asian cars we've owned..

car history (that i can remember):

'90 grand am i think it was? engine used in the omega car in the le mans racing twice, and won.
reason we sold it: i peed on the seat when i was a baby, and it was time to get a family car. still very reliable.

nissan maxima i think it was a '93.. was pretty good..
reason we sold it: no idea. maybe because i made a play-doh stick to the fabrick ceiling.. lol.

'97 saturn someting... didnt like the car... but when my dad drove, he let me shift gears.. i was 9... awesome experience..
reason we sold it: tiny car. needed a van.

'98 transport mini van.. nothing to say except it was my second home.. slept in it every trip to montreal...
reason we sold it: car got into too many collisions (not our fault).

'99 jeep grand cherokee laredo, which we still own to date. VERY reliable.

'03 olds silouhette.. more luxurious than transport, but essentially the same..
reason we sold it: my dad wanted a midlife crisis car. hence the cts. lol but very reliable for an american car.

'06 caddy cts, which we still own.

of all the cars we owned, the jeep is the most reliable we've owned to date. granted its a gas guzzler, but it lasted for almost a decade, longest we've ever owned a car. YET, the jeep is american...

and as for the caddy, its almost two years old.. and im surprised it gave us more trouble than we thought..

anyways, a short summary on the history of cars ive come into "contact" with lol

Old VW's once it is not taken care of become a rust bucket and everything else falls apart after that. you also heard about the joke that VW's catch on fire.

But the post-2006 VW are absolutely stunning! nothing to complain.
