Mother on Trial in Microwaved Baby Case By JAMES HANNAH,AP Posted: 2008-01-28 12:32:52 Filed Under: Crime News, Nation News DAYTON, Ohio (Jan. 28) - Investigators believe China Arnold killed her infant daughter by putting her in a microwave oven. Arnold's attorneys argue she had nothing to do with the baby's death in 2005. Jury selection for Arnold was scheduled to begin Monday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. Arnold, 27, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder. If convicted, she could face the death penalty. Police investigators believe Arnold killed 1-month-old Paris Talley by putting her in a microwave at her home. Coroner's officials have said the baby suffered high-heat internal injuries and had no external burns. They have ruled out scalding water, open flame or other possible causes of death that could have damaged the skin. Defense attorney Jon Paul Rion has said Arnold had nothing to do with her daughter's death and was stunned when investigators told her that a microwave might have been involved. Arnold took the baby to the hospital after finding her unconscious and does not know how she died, Rion said. During a pretrial hearing in July, police Detective Michael Galbraith said Arnold told him she arrived home in the early morning hours after drinking, fell asleep and was awakened at 2:30 a.m. by the baby's crying. She said she warmed a bottle in the microwave oven, tried to give it to the baby, changed the child's diaper and then fell asleep on the couch with the baby on her chest. Arnold said she and her children were the only ones in the apartment until her boyfriend arrived several hours later and noticed something was wrong with the baby. Galbraith said Arnold told him: "If I hadn't gotten so drunk, I guess my baby wouldn't have died." When cross-examined by Rion, Galbraith acknowledged that Arnold told him she did not know how the baby suffered the burns and that she had nothing to do with it that she could recall. Earlier this month, defense witness Robert Belloto, a staff pharmacist at Good Samaritan Hospital, testified he does not believe it would have been possible for Arnold to place the baby in the microwave because the woman was so intoxicated. Belloto said Arnold told him she had consumed about 40 percent of a pint of high-proof rum in 90 minutes. But he acknowledged that he had no other corroboration for her claim. Oh man this case sounds disgusting....irresponsible mother.
27? And still got THAT drunk? What is she? This sounded totally like another urban legend (how the babysitter got high and baked the baby thinking it's a turkey)... Freaky. I kind of hope this woman got sentenced harshly because this should send a message out to retarded people around the country.
Galbraith said Arnold told him: "If I hadn't gotten so drunk, I guess my baby wouldn't have died." that stood out to me the most oto, i mean, wtf? for one, drinking when you have an infant to take care of is a big no no, and second, wth is shw doing out partying when she's 27, doesn't she have a job or anything sheesh she deserves to fail, not death penalty though, that's too severe IF she's telling the truth that she did not murder baby, but that's only if, if she did, well i hope hell has some room for her
Murder and manslaughter sometimes only have a sliver of difference... Given that alcohol is involved, it's got to be difficult to prove that she is not intentional (even though she SAYS she isn't, then again, I believe most people would lie if that saves them from sitting in the chair or getting the needle)...
i mean, i understand what you're saying, it is pretty much unreasonable to her go, just because her excuse is "iwas drunkblablala" but i still don't think death penalty is deserving considerin how it wasn't intentional (but that's why i said if like, 2x, cause we dono if it's intentional or not.) a 40-50 year sentence is good enouhg to ruin her life imo even if it wasn't intentional.
This was the thing though... Imprisonment is very expensive and would go wasted on this kind of retarded behaviour. Further, she's going to come out (on good behaviour or some shite like that) facing a hard life (with lots of anger or whatnot) and possibly turn hardcore in her criminal life... If only we have something which DETECTS intention...
i mean seriously how can someone put a baby in the microwave so fucking sick i still find it hard to believe this story well we let the jury decides this
Being drunk ---> means you have no controle of yourself ----> letting you trueself come out If you really like you baby, you will never hurt or harm him. She is guilty
didn't even read the article, just the title is enuf. stupid f*cked up bitch. she should be stuck into a microwave and cooked alive as her punishment. freaking sick
either way she's not fit to be a mother because she was intoxicated with alcohol!!! how can you look after a baby if your drunk!?!?!!?!? stupid idiocy
Hang on... wouldn't the interior of the microwave be COVERED with splatters (of blood and other bodily fluid, dried) and hair? LOL@Epithelial cells... I kind of wonder what is left of the baby post nuking... -rolleyes
^Apparently not. Only "high-heat internal injuries and no external burns". That's why I was wondering...would you really find anything? Haha...burnt epithelial cells, maybe. DNA denatured beyond recognition...lolz
