Double standards of some chinese

Discussion in 'The Rant Section' started by sweetpotato123, Jan 29, 2008.

  1. Why is it when we attempt to speak in chinese in hk, we get slated for our pronounictaion etc and if we dont speak chinese we get slated again for being a "banana girl/boy" -noclue

You dont see us make fun of them when they speak in funny english grammar????

Why is it ok and acceptable for other people to do certain things, whereas for your own family, or child to do the same its not???

    aye.......

Because some people (not all of them, mind you) in Hong Kong have nothing to be proud of except for their so-called perfect Cantonese? For crying out loud, it's just so disappointing when people in Hong Kong can't even speak their mother tongue properly (with eloquence)

I can fragging b*tchslap them with my Cantonese even though half of my life is spent outside of Cantonese-speaking world.

And it's just human nature, it's kind of like how English-speakers would look down on someone with an "accent" (which is a totally subjective term), so you just have to do your own share of "looking down on others" to balance it out -lol

Haha...Speaking of an accent, I had a British professor who once said to us, "Don't tell me you don't understand my English. I don't have an accent. YOU have an accent, not me, definitely not me." Lol!

Hong Kong used to be an independent country in which almost all the population spoke in Cantonese. I don't think there is any other country that can boast that, is there? Hence they feel that the language is unique to their country, and if you can't speak it their way, YOU are the outsider. I dunno...that's how I think it goes. So they feel it is their right to laugh and to correct you to speak it their way.

LOL, I love what your professor said... The whole idea of an "accent" is just so totally ego-centric that it's funny when ridiculed.

I see what you mean about the Hong Kong population, HOWEVER, I think they are lacking the position to criticize others when many of the Hong Konger can't speak the language properly, just because one is born/living in Hong Kong doesn't automatically mean that one speaks Cantonese well.

Then again, I guess they just need something for their fragile ego to hold on to.

Its no biggie cuz things like this happens. Its just human nature to belittle or make fun of others who are different than us. Its sort of like a protective mechanism that a person has...

Yea I have had that experience before. but then I hung out with a bunch of HK people in my city and my ex was from hong kong so it improved my cantonese a lot.. Now I barely hae an accent when i speak cantonese. If people make fun of me I would be like hey I was born in hong kong so thats how I learn it, even though I immagratted to the US when I was 4. But it makes them back off if they don't know me.

lol i tried speaking chinese @ this resturant once w/ my friends, and said something like "bak sou" for white water, where as i wanted ice water, and he was like what??? it's bing sou! (ice water) lol iono ^^ it was funny tho

^Lol...isn't it "sui" instead of "sou"?

Oh, speaking of water, let me share a really funny experience. I was in this really crappy restaurant. I'll prove how crappy it is. I flipped through the menu and saw that they serve a wide variety of drinks, both cold and hot. After deciding what we wanted to order, we flagged the waitress. This waitress apparently couldn't understand english. I told her to bring me a glass of iced water. She told me they didn't have ice water. I was really puzzled and repeated my order really slowly...iced water. Again she said, "Sorry no ice water". I got a little agitated and asked her, "Then do you have ice?" She nodded. "Do you have water?" She nodded again. "Then bring me both!!" So yea, that's how I got my iced water in the end.
