this format war is just a waste of time and money...but i guess we need to have competition to make sure prices are kept at a minimum and we don't get gouged to death on things

the format war is already over. BluRay won it when warner bro's studios defected from HD DVD.
all the stores have already started clearing their HDDVD players out at prices around 120 bucks a pop, and some places aren't even carrying them anymore.

I just actually read this whole thread and it seems everyone is pretty pro PS3. I guess I'll give you a little more perspective between the two systems... Even though I still think this thread is a complete and utter fail.

    Xbox 360:
The 360 has had an extra year on the PS3 and it shows. With it's extensive game libary it provides a variety of choices for different gamers. Along with it's gaming library it also has THE BEST online community out of all the consoles (Calm down fanboys PS3 Home has yet to develop). Xbox live provides a user friendly online community that adds so much more to the console. With the available Market Place and download able add ons that extend the play value of almost every title. Not to mention the online games are extremely fun. Games like: Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Rainbow Six, Forza, and Team Fortress 2. Along with the online games there are also a number of notable single player titles like: Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and Mass Effect. However the Xbox still is not without it's faults. As many know, the stability of the Xbox is not at all great. With over heating problems and three red lights of death. Microsoft does offer a 3 year warranty, but after those 3 years you're on your own. It also doesn't use HD DVD or Blu-ray. Lowering it's potential compared to the PS3. Xbox live does cost a small fee, but not that much.

    PS3:
The PS3 was slow at the beginning of the console wars, but things seem to have picked up. With two price drops and a growing gaming library. Microsoft better watch out. Let's start with the fact that everyone seems to know. The PS3 is more powerful than the 360, that's no secret. Not only internally, but it also uses Blu-Ray discs. Which increases the potential of the console. As for the gaming library.. The PS3 does not have as much games as the 360, but things are getting there. With some already great released titles like: Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank: Future tools of destruction and Unreal Tournament 3. Not to mention some of the up and coming games like: GT5, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and the return of other key franchises. The online community for PS3 is not as great as Xbox Live, but it hasn't had that much time to develop either. I'm not sure how user friendly it is compared to Xbox Live, but I'm sure it will only get better. Sony had a rough start losing exclusive titles such as: Devil May Cry 4, Katamari, and GTA4, but things are picking up and the only left to go is up.

Ultimately it depends on your gaming prefences.

I feel like a broken record player........ <_<

I went to the Best Buy the other day and noticed that the HDMI cables are 100 bucks. Is this overpriced (because I see some online websites selling HDMI cables for 10 to 20 bucks)???

  11. unless these cables are diamond studded.. $100s is ridiculous..

^^Not too sure of the difference here is what the $100 monster cable offers:
    Product Features

    * Connects 1 HDMI component to another HDMI component via HDMI connection
    * Delivers a bandwidth greater than 4.95 Gbps for maximum performance
    * 24K gold-plated connectors enhance conductivity, resist corrosion and provide high-quality signal transfer
    * Duraflex protective jacket; precision-wound DoubleHelix construction
    * Low-loss nitrogen gas-injected dielectric for enhanced signal consistency and strength
    * Durable gold-plated internal shield; heavy-duty internal dual-strain relief

But I still think that its just a bunch of bs to con the average electronic buyer.-noclue
Its funny that the 5th feature says "Low-loss nitrogen gas-injected..." makes it sound like your getting a suped up car or something.

well.. the $100 monster cable, their speed is much more faster.. "4.95 Gbps" 1 of the fastest speed out there so far i think... with slower speed.. the quality will probably blur up...

edit: Q. What functionality was added to each version of HDMI?

The following provides an overview of major functionality added to each version of HDMI:

    HDMI 1.1:

    * Support for DVD Audio.

    HDMI 1.2:

    * Adds features and capabilities that increase HDMI's appeal for use in both the CE and PC industries. Specifically, the features and modifications for HDMI 1.2 include: Support for One Bit Audio format, such as SuperAudio CD's DSD (Direct Stream Digital), changes to offer better support for current and future PCs with HDMI outputs, including: availability of the widely-used HDMI Type A connector for PC sources and displays with full support for PC video formats, ability for PC sources to use their native RGB color space while retaining the option to support the YCbCr CE color space, requirement for HDMI 1.2 and later displays to support future low-voltage (i.e., AC-coupled) sources, such as those based on PCI Express I/O technology.

    HDMI 1.2a:

    * Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) features and command sets and CEC compliance tests are now fully specified.
    * Creation of version 1.2a of the HDMI Compliance Test Specification (CTS), which includes a CEC Supplement. HDMI CTS 1.2a has been updated for technical consistency with HDMI Specification 1.2a as well as to the recently released HDMI Specification 1.2.
    * Significantly, CTS 1.2a contains additional cable and connector testing and Authorized Testing Center (ATC) submission requirements. Specifically, under CTS 1.2a, the Adopter shall submit for testing to the ATC any new HDMI cable whose length exceeds previously tested cables.
    * Additionally, HDMI Licensing, LLC will maintain a list of approved connectors. For a device to pass CTS 1.2a testing at an ATC, all connectors on such device must appear on the approved connector list. To add a connector to this list, the vendor must submit to the ATC or HDMI Licensing, LLC full and passing testing results.

    HDMI 1.3:

    * Higher speed: HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) to support the demands of future HD display devices, such as higher resolutions, Deep Color and high frame rates. In addition, built into the HDMI 1.3 specification is the technical foundation that will let future versions of HDMI reach significantly higher speeds.
    * Deep Color: HDMI 1.3 supports 10-bit, 12-bit and 16-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 8-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification, for stunning rendering of over one billion colors in unprecedented detail.
    * Broader color space: HDMI 1.3 adds support for “x.v.Color™” (which is the consumer name describing the IEC 61966-2-4 xvYCC color standard), which removes current color space limitations and enables the display of any color viewable by the human eye.
    * New mini connector: With small portable devices such as HD camcorders and still cameras demanding seamless connectivity to HDTVs, HDMI 1.3 offers a new, smaller form factor connector option.
    * Lip Sync: Because consumer electronics devices are using increasingly complex digital signal processing to enhance the clarity and detail of the content, synchronization of video and audio in user devices has become a greater challenge and could potentially require complex end-user adjustments. HDMI 1.3 incorporates automatic audio synching capabilities that allows devices to perform this synchronization automatically with total accuracy.
    * New HD lossless audio formats: In addition to HDMI’s current ability to support high-bandwidth uncompressed digital audio and all currently-available compressed formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS®), HDMI 1.3 adds additional support for new lossless compressed digital audio formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.

    Q. What’s new in the HDMI 1.3 Specification?

    * Higher speed: Although all previous versions of HDMI have had more than enough bandwidth to support all current HDTV formats, including full, uncompressed 1080p signals, HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) to support the demands of future HD display devices, such as higher resolutions, Deep Color and high frame rates.

^^ I looked on firefold.com and found a 6 foot hdmi cable for 7 bucks.
    Here are the specs:
It covers the 1.0 to 1.3 and transfers at a faster speed than the monster cable.
Is it that the monster cables are more durable or better quality (both offer lifetime warranty)???

lmfao, dont buy monster cables, they are so damned over priced its not even funny.

a gadget site did a comparison test between 10 dollar HDMI cables and 80 dollar ones and found there to be almost 0 difference in picture quality
