i've just realised that is pretty cheap, u couldn't get such a high spec computer for that price in the UK i don't think.
The good joy of building it yourself.. you save a lot of money and get a rather beasty computer =D I added the blu-ray because it is also a burner for everything else and blu-ray industry just got promoted, so to speak, so might as well
For $220, you can do A LOT better than an Intel motherboard. I would suggest a board with an nVidia chipset perhaps a 680i or 780i. That will allow more room for future upgrades than the Intel based board would. Also, the Zalman you want is the CNPS9700 , not the 9500. The 9700 is larger and would provide better cooling for just a little bit more. I'm glad you decided not to skimp on the power supply. Oh and don't forget the Artic Silver 5 thermal compound. The processor and heatsink should come with thermal compound but the Arctic Silver does a hell of a lot better job. The case you selected is huge. I know because I own one and I love it. It comes with a tool-less setup for the PCI, which sucks. I suggest just removing it and using screws. It easier and looks a lot cleaner that way.
performance wise the 9600gt is ok...i'd much rather drop a few more bucks and pick up a 8800gt. also for the price of 220 i wouldn't get an intel board i'd get a DFI, evga or an ASUS board with the nvidia chip set and just looking at your specs it looks like a gaming rig i'd get SLI incase your buddy feels adventerous and gets 2 video cards...you can't do it with this card
should prolly get the 9600 from evga if you're gonna buy that, the ssc version is faster... i agree with tonkachi though... might as well get the 8800gt. Unless you plan on getting 2 X 9600... i heard the sli on the 9 series works better, but this may be wrong. Better yet... the new 9800, that things a beast
or... get a 8800gt/gts for about $200-$230 for vid card... mobo.. get the nvidia mobo... rams can be cheaper.. along with hard drive also..

The P35 chipset is very nice, most people currently recommend this. By selecting components that are just as good if not better, the money saved can go towards the 8800GT I selected here. The Seasonic looks a little expensive here, but you save #40 during the sales it seems. Seasonic is actually a powersupply manufacturer and they produce high quality, quiet and reliable P/S's. This one is incredibly efficient as well. Also to note, you'd never be hitting over 500W, really. G-SKILL has quite the name for itself now, the RAM is regularly on sale I believe and so makes it a better deal than the rest. The WD costs much less than the Hitachi, and they essentially perform the same. I don't feel having a BD-RW drive at this point is worth anything, the discs are too expensive at the moment. The Scythe, IMO, has a much better heatsink than the Zalman and their noise levels don't differ by much.
thanks guys for all the nice suggestions! I will reassess with my friend on what he needs/wants the build was a quick one just to get an estimate really... but looking at your suggestions it could be a lot cheaper @reflection thanks for the build, specs looks good enough, funny thing about that board is I remember looking at that before it came out, have totally forgotten about it hahaha thanks!
i like the build you have right here, but i wouldnt recommend blu ray burner so fast...i rather wait a few years when the prices goes down, i mean blu ray is still kinda new in my opinion. I mean DVD x16 burner cost somuch back then, my recent computer, i bought a dvd drive for 20 x16, double layer
8800GT 512 vs 8800GTS 512mb http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/1237/11/page_10_final_thoughts/index.html Not much difference in price. I'd go for the GTS. The performance of the GTS in most games over the GT is worth the extra bit of cash.
change harddrive manufacturer to a seagate or westerndigital, btw you do know that a full tower is freaking huge right? lol
