Cafferty (CNN host) said in a TV show on April 9 that the Chinese products are "junk" and the Chinese people "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years." CNN then issued a statement on Tuesday saying "it was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way." However, the network stated that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people. Jack Cafferty said something retarded on CNN. He is racist and criticized China, underestimate china government. by saying that statement on CNN, he is challenging the Chinese government. Now CNN is facing a lawsuit of 1.6 billion dollars by 14 lawyers in Beijing, China, reason of the lawsuit is CNN and their host Jack Cafferty violated Chinese people's dignity and reputation, and human kind rights. Shame on CNN, bad image. I am very disappointed at CNN, so as everyone in the whole world. I personally express if he thinks Chinese products are junk, stop trading in China, not everything is junk, and just because of that issue, doesn't mean all Chinese people are stupid. exactly what i think, they are gonna so lose now. unlucky for CNN, i reckon Jack will prob get sacked for that. besides if u don't like our stuff how comes everything is made from china, including ur tv which u bought. if it was junk, i like to see him making a tv himself or gettting one made from the USA.
The problem here is that ethnic pride has become a trade label. If someone were to walk around and call themselves "PEPSI" or something else commercial, then it is easily understandable when a customer offers a perception (opinion) that a product is less than optimal (for whatever the reason). Likewise if Jack Cafferty has stated a specific instance, eg. say, "XYZ company, Ltd, of Guangzhou, who is a subsidiary of USA Shanghai imports, is blah blah blah..." then no one would have batted an eye. Even if he were to condemn "Chinese manufactures" and call their "quality assurance process devoid of any serious efforts" would not have been so far off the mark. However, his comments (as stated) "...and the Chinese people "basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years." is rather inept. The biggest goon, Mao, is long dead. Somewhat lesser goons like Deng, who BTW was smart enough to open up trade doors, which finally liberated the PRC from crushing poverty (My hat's off to Mr. "Black or White Cat"), is also dead. So, the comment itself is factually incorrect. His sentiments of the "Chinese people" is rather unclear. If he were referring to the PRC CCP government, and purely in the political sense, then he is absolutely correct. If he was referring to the average man on the street, then his comment was idiotically racist. Suing CNN? Chinese politics just got smarter by a landslide. It finally allows the PRC government a form of redress in world opinions after the bad press drubbing that it got over Tibet. But, and this is a big one; the flip side of this is that now it will open up the door for foreign suits of Chinese state controlled media comments that maligns the west, esp Americans. But that's not the biggie, it would the comparisons of how US courts and Chinese courts proceed with those kinds of cases that would be the pandora's box for the PRC. Chinese courts have been a state control instrument since the inception of the PRC in 1949. To compare how western and Chinese courts function would be a PRC publicity nightmare. While on the surface this may seen emotionally tres cool to lots of Chinese, to the PRC government it can quickly become a rather sharp double edge sword. Was Cafferty stupid? Of course. Should CNN consider firing him as a sign of apology? Absolutely. Should the Beijing lawsuit go ahead? Well, that's debatable. If you asked the PRC government if they would pay 1.6 Billion USD for the Tibetan - Olympics nightmare to go away? They probably would have jumped at the chance. So if they get 1.6 billion and then open up Chinese courts to criticism for years to come, how much is that worth? I say, better to look before one leaps. This isn't a matter of national or ethnic pride, its a bigger and more cut throat game of state politics. Ralph
didn't we all learn "think before you speak" when we were younger. guess the old man wasn't thinking.......at all
the oldie jack thinks he is the best, but actually he is the most stupid guy of the whole world. but he has nobody to blame, and because we chinese people are too kind he blamed us.........helpless
Cafferty is an ill spoken opinionated ass; danger to China from the likes of him is sub zero. The real danger to China resides in Zhongnanhai, as always, with the CCP. Score card: Death of Chinese: Cafferty : 0 CCP : Millions Ralph
I have an article about it here: http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-04/17/content_7992155.htm This was also said in the article: CNN then issued a statement on Tuesday saying "it was not Mr. Cafferty's nor CNN's intent to cause offence to the Chinese people, and CNN would apologize to anyone who has interpreted the comments in this way". However, the network stated that Cafferty was offering his "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people. Chinese government and China's people are the same...what does Cafferty mean here? Ok really now it's in English but someone interpret it for me. I think this person's just trying to cover up some damage that can't be taken back.
Whoa... If you don't know what the difference between government and people, then this thread is rather moot. It would be like saying that every American is exactly like George Bush. Or, let's put it this way, every Chinese agreed that the PLA needed to go into Tiananmen Square with tanks and kill about 3000 Chinese people, or shoot Tibetans as a daily pick me up. So, what do they call China now, the Borg? Ralph
This is Because. I really feel sad about to know this. I think CNN is under US Govt. Thats why its not true to speak this. I think everyone knows this that its not real. Chines is very good and loving peoples. They help each other. Because my Father also live in china and told me about them.

some people need to learn to separate the chinese people from the chinese government. and stop using the phrase "The Chinese are _____" to refer to the actions of the Chinese government.
