As they start draining the huge quake lakes, old questions linger... What does everyone make of this? Is the government trying to hide something or protect some people? From the surface I'm inclined to speculate that there probably was some local officials' malfeasance, just from general knowledge that most construction in China (as it does elsewhere too) doesn't happen unless you put something into someone's pocket. Who those pockets belong to, and how much local government is willing to protect them is the question. The other question is, how far is the central government willing to go after those in regional power for corruption that led to more needless deaths. This should prove interesting as well as revealing. Ralph
I cant say im surprised about "dodgy" building practices and so on also apparently the Chinese Government is beginning to tighten up restriction on what people can post in China with specific mention of anything to do with "shoddy school construction"....
Hmmm... is that in its best interests? I mean, wouldn't that just add fuel to the fire that they're trying to hide something? At the beginning of this, they seemed pretty transparent and got kudos from the world press for being finally being so open. Why the retrenchment; they have to know that it creates the atmosphere for and begs for criticisms of cover ups? Ralph
