i've seen the one with the indian guy before.. so funny and gosh i think hes more fluent then i am haha
I'll tell you folks two rather funny stories. Two cousins of mine (one from Hong Kong, male and looks perfectly Asian; the other from Paris, female, product of a mixed marriage, and looks perfectly white) went on a trip together to Beijing. When they walked into the hotel the first thing that the service people did was to fire off a series of questions in rapid Mandarin at the Hong Konger, who then pointed his finger at the other, as he didn't speak a lick of Mandarin while she teaches it. And so it was like this for their entire trip. Everyone would assume that the Chinese looking one would speak Chinese, and were surprised by the non Asian doing so instead. On another occasion, right after the bamboo curtain lifted and overseas Chinese were allowed to travel into the PRC for the first time, many beggars routinely approached "foreigners" to beg for something. Even those that did not seem to be without financial need would do so. On the assumption that I was perhaps from Hong Kong or Taiwan, one old well dressed (in a Mao suit) codger trailed and badgered me with a litany of his problems, hoping (I got the gist of it but my mandarin is admittedly poor) to perhaps elicit sympathy that would produce a financial reward. Reflexively answering him in English ("I'm sorry, but I really don't understand what you're saying...") brought a real surprise. As soon as he heard the English, his face contorted into an evil snarl, and he began shouting anti-US and anti western invectives; he then couldn't seem to get away from me fast enough, and as a parting coup de grace, spat at me. I guess he was one of those old commies that believed their political mantra religiously. It was certainly an eye opener. :ugh: Ralph
