Ha Ha Ha... Cultural Cognitive Dissonance; almost makes one embarrassed to be Chinese, eh? Where's Irving Howe (World Of Our Fathers) when you need him? LOL... Gotta love it :ugh:

There is a reason they call it chinatown.... cuz its supposed to be exactly like China, and your description of chinatown matches my impression of China quite well lol.

still love it though, the scents, stores, sounds... always lots of life in a big city chinatown

lol Melbournes chinatown must be way better than that then, i mean no fishes, no smelling stuff , no dirty water, our china town is mostly like resturants, bookshops, a cinema for HK movies, um those HK fashion clothing shops and giftshops lol,
downside is that its expensive...... than other places :(

Isn't the Chinatown in San Francisco suppose to be the mother of all Chinatowns?
No, you don't want to visit the Chinatown in Vancouver, really. Main Street, which use to be the gateway to Chinatown, is completely riddled with bums and addics. Although, the Olympics are nearing and the municipality is trying to clear them away. Well, if you want to be around a lot of Chinese, Richmond, B.C. is pretty much the "Chinatown" here now. =)

meh... SF Chinatown just has the benefit of being the most traditional and fed by good surroundings... it's the only Chinatown with a large enuff Chinese community outside of the actual physical landmark that give it such a large influence in the region...

NYC Chinatown and "New" Chinatown in Alhambra/Monterey Park in LA are big and have large Chinese populations, but lack tradition and strong cultural influence... they're just living as Chinese in a foreign land rather than promoting Chinese culture...

Sydney's Chinatown is pretty good place-None of that smelly stuff that you guys are talking about. It's right in the heart of the city, and you see so many different kinds of cultures eating and buying stuff.

chinatown is just all restaurants, i would like it to be more honkie. im glad we dun sell fish in chinatown, otherwise no one would go.

  17. Boston's Chinatown is rather small, its not as bad as it use to be, they are cleaning it up ever so slowly but surely.... but i think NYC chinatown is much bigger and has more authenticity and shops i like it better

i feel like that the chinese there are so much more unsanitary but yet feel like it's totally okay. when i go out to CT to visit my grandparents, I always feel like i need to shower and wash myself in antibacterial afterwards. I know i kinda sound stuckup but NYC's Chinatown is terribly DIRTY.
