I saw the opening ceremony three times, and frankly I cannot get enough of it. The performances are great, the fires work were spectacular and the theme song "You and Me" is unforgettable. This is truly the best opening ceremony I have ever seen.

It was ALL good; but I'm sure that everyone had their favorite moments. Mine was when the globe rose out of the floor and then people running around the surface of it. That was the moment that I just sat there with slacken jaw in awe...

To be honest, insofar as showmanship the display and all the events were flawless. As far as I'm concerned the show was the best the world has ever seen. As for the political story, well, that's another thread.

favourite moment was probably the Tai Chi and the drumming and the little girl singing although it wasnt her singing, but at that moment, it was just nice and a bit of sadness added into it, not sure why, maybe cos its a little girl in front of a crowd singing. i doubt London will even match this spectacle. can they even afford to do a show like this?? Beijing on TV with presenters showing parts of Beijing with the train system for example is awesome, just like the system Hong Kong uses. London, lets not go there :D

LOL... So, in the next 40 or 50 years, after the Beijing system gets old and shabby, a newly installed system in say, Africa, can outshine anyone in the rest of the world. LOL... What's lost on most people is that the older the system, the harder it is to maintain, and the more democratic a society, the harder still to build things because of usage rights. New York's system is over a hundred years old and it it almost impossible to maintain. Almost no new tunnels can be dug simply because there is already so much shit underground. London's is not far from that either. They used to use the Underground tubes as bomb shelters during the war. But, in a communist country that neither has to worry about adapting to existing infrastructure or worry about ownership rights, it does have certain construction advantages. Such that, a super subway or underground tube system like Beijing's can be built with relative ease. Other large cities in China are actually hoping to do the same. In another generation even those cities will surpass Beijing's as technology gets better. So sometimes, being late to do something has its advantages too.

Oh, and spend 40 billion USD on an Olympic show? Only China would have the gravitas for that. The rest of the world may think that a bit, how to put this delicately? Going a bit overboard, shall we say? But, overboard or no, it really was spectacular and they certainly got what they wanted, despite having to pay handsomely for it. But hey, that's politics nowadays. You don't have to be good, just look good will suffice, and boy, they did look good. ;)

Another part that most people failed to notice in this thread is the Tang dynasty costumes (similar to the ones worn in Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower). Those costumes were simply magnificent (see below).
