I don't know about anyone else, but PRC Women's Gymnastics rocks. The men are good too, but the women's squad is much more endearing. Even the Russians and Romanians have to take a back seat. And how about that guy from Togo winning a bronze? Who wudda thunk it? Shhh.... its a state secret... -censored Ralph

Two issues that I want to broach that may piss people off because it may not be in the spirit of things, but here goes. First, the US swimmer Phelps. I tippeth my hat to him for winning so many medals. But there in lies the problem; he's won so many medals. Granted, he's got the new high tech low drag Speedo but come on, so do a lot of other swimmers. I don't want to take anything away from the man, but to win so many events, so easily, with new world records for many of them, begs the questions of "how the hell did he do it?" I hope that he can withstand the inevitable scrutiny. One thing that can account for that is auto-transfusion (he banks his own blood three months ago and then a week before the event, transfuses it back into himself, giving him extra oxygen carrying capacity - almost impossible to detect). Second, a report appear in Sport Illustrated that stated one of the PRC gold medalists was only thirteen years old, making her ineligible for participation. They supposedly sourced the story from the Chinese press (gov controlled site: Xinhua), but after she won, they went back to verify the story and the page concerning her was removed. Other Chinese sources listed her as fourteen (still ineligible) but subsequently amended their listings to the minimum age of sixteen. Granted, there is a perception that Asians are small. That may have been so when access to protein and proper nutrition was a factor. That's why so many overseas born Chinese are six foot or better while their China born parents are "four foot nothings." Feed us right and we grow up with the best of them. Considering that these Chinese athletes are state sponsored, they are fed the best of food and given the best of living standards. If anything, there should be no difference between their growth and that of westerners, and they start them at the age of three. So that begs the question, is the PRC sending in under aged participants? Ralph
