virgin broadband will cap your speed for 5 hours if you go over a certain limit per day

I had the 20mb line and if i used more than 3GB in one day they would limit my speeds down to about 3mb for 5 hours

maybe that is the issue, check their website on the fair usage crap

oh ur with virgin, it still shouldn't be that bad tbh cos my friend is on virgin too and he's internet is pretty quick. oh and btw dim8sum the way that i understand was that they have a limit to how much u can download in an hour rather than a day i think.

well MU does vary in speed a lot of the time but then again an hour does seem excessive. u should complain. lol.

Yeah, sometimes when I download from MU the speeds can be erratic, going from 20 kb/s to 250 kb/s and back down, etc. I suggest you use a download manager like IDM to maximize your speeds.

is virgin a cable based or is it a DSL based internet connection service? if it is cable based your essential on a ring that shares a big pipe of internet bandwidth with everybody in that ring. Certain areas will be faster because there are less people in that ring so there is more bandwidth to go around.

BT is not a good gauge to determine how fast you can go on your download, because it is very dependent on the type of seeds and peers you are connecting to. Also MU has a flucuating download speed...at times you hit 1XXKB/s and times you'll get 50KB/s its very arbitrary.

The best way to gauge how much your network is doing is to do periodic speedtest to see how much bandwidth you are getting from sites like www.speedtest.net

So they have? Ah thats not fair. Oh yea, I made a mistake, I just found out my Connection isnt 4MB, its the XL one which is 20MB

  13. Hey, so your on BT, you must be pretty far from the terminal (cant remember the actual name) to be havng that kind of slow speed. On the 8Mb service i will get just over 4Mb of speed so i guess on a 4Mb package i would get optimal speed.

Anyway im using Virgin Media which i advise you switch to, it will be much faster, only problem is its crappy fair usage policy which means you can download upto 750MB after 4pm then you get throttled to a 2Mb connection from a 4Mb connection and it stay like that till after 12am, after that you can dload as much as you like till 4pm the next day, its not nice but i can live with that.

Night time youll find there is a lot of downloading going on, especially with dirty old men dloading stuff they couldnt do when the kids and wife are awake :ohnoes:

  14. Noooooooooooooo, if they get in the way of my dloading then im leaving them idiots, they give you super amazing super speed downloads and throttle you whenever they get the chance... i rather go BT if thats the case, at least i know were i stand.

I am using virgin media, My package is also the XL one which is 20MB.

Today in the morning I did a speed test and got 13,796 kb/s DL and 757 kb/s UL

Im using BT atm and its worse than virgin

BT offer crap speeds, max of 8mb/s, and depends on where the exchange is to your house, i only get 6mb/s and uber crap upload speeds

also BT cap my bittorrent speed permanently everyday from 4pm to 12am, at least with virgin i know i only get capped for 5 hours if i use more than 3GB (for the 20mb package)

do not go with BT..im with them rite now and on torrents you get 5kb/s even with MR torrents.
    and MU its about 7kb/s.

only go with BT if your connection disconnects or resets all the time cause tht wat happened to me with orange. connection reset every 20 mins or so.u cudnt download anything on MU.
BT can fix tht for u.

yeh im thinking of switching to Virgin as soon as contract is up

Blame other people for it =P Certain ISP's advertise like 5mbps but they actually only give you like 2 or even 1

Thats why I switched from BT to virgin. By The Way, BT Banned me from using their Internet service cause I use to download so much and complain with the bad speed.

    Good choice!

How can we blame them? not like they gonna do anything about it

^tbh apart from the bad speeds, BT have never let me down, compared to virgin where i had to spend a lot of money calling them on my mobile to sort out my bills, and actually turning up to install my cable broadband

but i am thinking of somewhere else now, cause my BT contract is over the min contract term
