I am replacing an existing CPU with a new one from HP. I customized this one and would like ya'll opinion about it. Do you think I should change anything to make things go faster; better graphics, or whatsoever?

I am using the computer for games (not much), movie (so, so), and home business (decent) - basically, a conglomerate of everything. Of course, gotta burn DVD, CD, etc ... Thanks for your help! This cost me about $900. Worth it?

Another brand recommendation?? If so, please tell me too - about the built and all. Thanks again.

    Brand: HP

Operating system: Genuine windows Vista Home Premium w/svc pack 1 (64 bit)
Processor: Intel (R) core (TM) 2 Quad processor Q9300
Memory: 4 GB DDR2-800MHZ dual channel SDRAM (2x2048)
Graphics Card: 512MB NVIDIA Geforce 9500GS, DVI-I, HDMI, VGA adapter
Hard Drive: Free upgrade to 500 GB 7200 rpm sata 3 Gb/s hard drive from 320GB
Networking: No additional (Ethernet LAN port on system board )
Primary CD/DVD Drive: Blu-ray DVD player & lightscribe supermulti DVD Burner
Front Productivity Ports: 15-in-1 memory card reader, 2usb headphone port
Productivity software: Microsoft (R) Works 9.0
Keyboard & Mouse: HP Multimedia keyboard & HP optical mouse.

I'd like to point out two things...

    1) you don't need a quad-core... ur needs just don't require one, and it will be a waste of cash... it's better to get a dual-core with a higher clock speed... people will say, "oooo but quad core is more future proof!" future proof? its cpu's they get old after 1yr, no matter the specs...

    2) the video card blows... especially when u can get 8800GTS for about $120... and the HD4850 for $150...

sorry, but in my mind, ur paying at the very least $200 more than u really should for this system...

btw my prices are in the US, sooooo... if ur in CAD it could be different...

i'd recommend to build ur own and forget abt the brand
or even just go to a pc store, pick your parts and pay the labour for them to put it together

good suggestions...but it looks like he is buying an off the shelf pc. For an off the shelf pc it isn't that expensive especially with those type of specs. tack on the fact that the system is coming with a Blu-ray player you can't say 900 is too pricey for it...

    @poster

you'd probably save about 50-100 off the system if you went with a dual core (just a thought)

if you build it yourself, you can actually pick out the parts yourself and what brands you actually like :) that price you can probably build a good system.

    1. http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/store_access.do?aoid=35252&template_type=cto_config&config_id=LOWEST&bomProductId=KZ852AV%23ABA
    2. Select the following options (or any combination totalling $350 or more)
      1. Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad processor Q9300 [add $170]
      2. 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300 and TV Tuner Card/PVR [add $80]
      3. Blu-ray DVD player & Lightscribe SuperMulti DVD burner [add $150]
    3. Add to cart and check out, apply coupon DT4523for $400 off
    4. Your total will be $1050 - $400 = $650
then buy urself another 2gb of ram for $40 and another 500gbHDD for $75 and ur still about $130 under what he was trying to get... hell, take off the vid card upgrade and pick up a 4850 for $150 and he's STILL under by like $60....

If we didn't put into consideration the coupon that you are applying for the system and assuming that this person may not want to mess with the computer by taking parts in and out of the system...the system he is looking at ain't bad. Some people just want to buy a system for a good deal and be done with it. Toss onto the fact that there is a 400 off coupon for the system and he's specced out a decent system..

secondly the poster ain't going to be gaming at all why would he want to spend an extra 150 for a card that won't do him any real good?

  10. Aoes

    Aoes Well-Known Member

lol... then why bother asking if the system is a good deal or not if we didn't put any consideration into the coupon? unless getting the best possible parts for the lowest prices possible isn't considered as a good deal, then my bad...

The system OP spec'd has an upgraded video card option... as far as i know, a non gamer who just wants to watch HD videos doesn't even need that graphics card... most simple onboard solutions paired with a TV Tuner with HDMI would be suitable enuff... his own spec'd card is actually a higher end option available to him...

HD4850 for the win for video cards -^_^ anyways... coupons are good.. unless that person isn't in the US.. your better off getting a dell if your not in US or go build your computer instead.

Vista may sound like a the latest and most wonderful operating system if you're a Microsoft sales rep, but frankly, it's nearly useless. I would rather use XP (with service pack 2) as it's been road tested and nearly all the bugs have been eliminated. Just about all programs on the market will work with XP. Many programs have not yet been fully Vista enabled, so that you're not going to get 64 bit processing, that is, if they work at all under Vista. And if you don't know the difference between 16, 32, or 64 bit, and what that means to computer processing, then don't worry about it. Stick to XP.

Aoes has some great ideas, and it's obvious that he not only knows his hardware, but knows the market and the average prices. While I don't disagree with anything that he said, I'm a bit reluctant to suggest any video card, here's why: If you're a solid gamer that needs Frames per second like most men need oxygen to live, then we wouldn't be even having this conversation. Inotherwords, you would belong in a class of computer users that are hardware fanatics by default (this is, you already know all this stuff by necessity of your gaming addiction). Since you're not, then the kind of games that you play are probably just the fair to average things that generally won't need the expense of a high end video card. Heck, I'm betting that for your needs, even "on board" <gasp> (chip is already on the motherboard) video will suffice. But Aoes is right, the prices that you've quoted is a bit steep from where I sit (building computers for 15 years). However, if you don't build your own box, then the price is about average.

The thing to look for is how reliable the company is, and what their business practice has been. Whatever you do, don't buy a Dell computer. Not that their computers are bad (as a matter of fact, most Dell's are excellent), but the company's business practices has made it the target of multiple class action lawsuits (like signing you up for their high cost finance program even though you never asked or needed it). Just google the words: "dell class action" and it would be self explanatory.

At any rate, good luck. BTW, the CPU (central processing unit) is also known as the processor; the box that sits on the desk with all the wire coming out of it is simply referred to as the computer.

cuz the coupon was never introduced into the original equation. the op asked if his specs and price was a good buy.

as i see you have tried the hp configurator the video card was forced upon him by HP. Without that video card they won't sell you the blu-ray player.

    @ralph

your right about vista being a crappy OS, but microsoft pretty much strong armed most of the manufactors into selling only Vista, if i had a choice i wouldn't touch vista. the only company that i've seen sell xp on their main stream pc's is dell and even then they charge you an extra 99 bucks for it.

lol if that's the case, then just about any prebuilt system would be a decent to good buy...

his 9500GS is not required in the configurator for blu-ray... he could have just sneaked by with a 9300 =/

true...but i interpreted what the Op was askin was his a good bang for the buck...and it had decent specs and for an off the shelf computer. now with that 400 buck coupon the computer is an even better deal.

personally i'd rather buy a dell cuz of our corporate discount and the customer service that we receive from them

its funny after building computers for the past 10 years, i finally cracked and bought an off the shelf system....i kinda got tired of having to fight with the different manufactors about parts on my system that didn't work...

iunno about this.. some parts are very cheap at Fry's :xd: thats where i got all my parts for my computer under $500 which now i'm thinking of upgrading video card. well most of the computer, if your not into any hard core multi tasking, a dual core is enough which you can buy a very cheap desktop with a dual core or a expensive one lol
