depending where you get the parts, i built my Q6600 for $600 when it first came out with top line Intel BADX2 board and now, < $500 (Q6600 @ $200 or less, board @ $100, WinXP @ $100, 4GB RAM @ $60) <-- boards as cheap as $50 will support Quad now and the good about building your own is that you can reuse most parts when you need a next upgrade like Motherboard, CPU and RAM, everything reusable). I would really recommend that you make an Ghost image or an image or any sort after you installed your Windows + updates + drivers on the PC and that way u will never ever need to put in that cdkey again...

my next upgrade will be the Xeon Quad Core 2CPU system with ECC RAM and since i have a thermaltake $200 case (it will support all those huge video cards out there with many room spare for cables), i will only need new motherboard, those CPUs and RAM, everything else i am keeping and planning to reuse.

    yes you can!

Prices for PC parts are predicted to come down in the next few weeks due to the sluggish sales. Building your own is the way to go.

they are still producing OEM copies of it till the end of the year. they are in the talks about extending that another 6 months because the response to vista have been very very crappy.

if all else fails buy a copy of vista business and ask for the downgrade.

My opinion is that it's better to get used to Vista. XP will be phased out eventually. If you buy PC with XP now, it'll probably lose support from MSoft before the PC dies.

Your best chance is to just buy the disc itself if you want XP

YES you still can, retail version of XP has been discontinued as of June 30, 2008, however OEM versions of XP will be up until January 31, 2009.
when you have Vista Business or Ultimate, you can downgrade to XP, if you don't like vista, that is too bad because all future version of winodows would be based on vista
if anyone one needs one I am happy to help

parts have gone way up, for example E8400 CPU went up by $20 recently DUE TO USD going up

I don't know why so many people hate Vista, I know it takes up a lot of resource on certain applications but nowaday most computer will come with 4gb RAM and the drivers are not good other than that Vista is a good OS.

Yah you can't buy Windows XP anymore. They took it off the selves in store a looong time ago. Vista isn't too bad though once you get use to it. Not man are able to accept the new interface. But yeah, ditto with everyone else, download it or request from where ever you're buying it. If you are goign with Dell, get the core i7 XD great pricing

You can always downgrade but I'm pretty sure all the drivers on the laptop are for vista only. Finding drivers can be a bitch.

I think you can still get XP on business laptops from lenovo and HP. Vista does suck, and instead of providing us with a service pack Microsoft is going to develop another operating system called window 7.
