Here are three things that suck about being Canadian right now: Last week the CRTC sided with Bell against a group of small Internet Service Providers who want to offer their customers unthrottled connections where what they download is their own business and not subject to interference. In last week’s throne speech the Conservative government renewed their intention to “modernize” Canadian copyright law. Their effort to do so last session was Bill C-61, a woefully unbalanced and retrograde piece of legislation that led to the greatest citizen backlash to any proposed bill in recent memory. Yet there has been no indication from new Industry Minister Tony Clement that a much-needed public consultation will take place. The best he has offered is the possibility of a “slightly different” version of the bill. Twitter has just announced that they are killing outbound SMS messaging in Canada due to exorbitant and constant rate hikes from Canadian cell providers (former Industry Minister Jim Prentice vowed to get tough on SMS price gouging, then backpeddled). Cell phone rates in Canada are among the highest in the world, and the result is that mobile penetration is pathetically low and that emerging new cultural platforms like Twitter are being hobbled. This growing list of backwards policies is already creating a sense of digital isolation: Canadians can’t stream the videos Americans stream, download the files Americans download, remix the media Americans remix, or tweet the way Americans tweet. With the election of Barack Obama, digital culture in the U.S. hit a tipping point, where a robust online public sphere proved itself capable of changing the world. Meanwhile, here in Canada we’re approaching our own tipping point, where a series of ignorances and capitulations threaten to turn our country into a digital ghetto. sigh... fooking politicians i dont really care about dl caps and shit cuz there are always ways around those, but the fact that cellphone bills in canada are ridiculously exorbitant pisses me off to no end.

It's true, everything is so god damn slow in Canada and it's not just the technology, the lifestyle is freaking slow too -_-

well, 30 bucks for unlimited data at bell vs 30 bucks for 6 gigs at rogers... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm still 30 bucks lol

EDIT;; "TO BECOME the digital ghetto?" We are already the digital ghetto. We're behind from everyone else in everything.
Uncapped internet doesn't even exist here, and the speed of the net is one of the slowest in western nations. And its going to get even slower, with a proposed net filter which has FAILED testing.. and will be implemented despite the fact it blocks most of the useful sites and slows the already slow internet. Techwise, Australia is soo far behind. Apart from Apple products, everything takes like half a year just to be released here, if not at all. The tech is ridiculously expensive, when you compare it with the prices with the US, they're a joke here.

your net is "capped"..?!....does that mean you can only d/l a certain amount a day...?...in uk...we have diff net packages depending how muchy you can afford but there are options where there's unlimited d/l i guess the net here is okies la...options between cable and broadband... Psshhhh expensive tech products..?!...you cant say that....try being in uk.. Where everything is ubbbbbbbbber expensive....damnit...>.<
we dont have unlimited downloads.. :( the plans that do get capped at a certain amount. eg go over ur monthly 20gb the rest of th emonth is slower than dial up (bout 6-7kb/s). or if u do have unlimited dl.. after u go over ur certain amount it's 15c/mb :(. or my isp is $3/gb (cheapest i know of )
^ omggg thas terrible...i dun even know how muchy i d/l....now i know why you guys hatey it so muchy...i think im on unlimited at the moment...and its great but i have times when the net is ubbbbber slow anyways....i mean it was slow for a good 2-3 days so i rang the i-net company and they just fob you off saying they're making improvements to the speed or something and the slowness is temp...
^yeh but UK unlimited internet packages nearly always (except sky) come with fair usage policy, where is they think your downloading too much, they cap your speed or cut your internet..... -__-
