Original Mil-12 prototype that was eventually canceled by Mil.

Just looking at the unmodified rotors, I doubt that you can add two more levels of compartments along with four turbofan engines to the body without a tremendous cost in weight before it even gets off the ground. More pics, notice that none are real photos, but all are rendered. That should give you a hint as to how 'real' this is:

It'd be cool if this thing were real.
Seems Engadget is thinking it may just be an early joke.

I actually did a bit of thinking and I think I came up with a very plausible scenario in which something like this might work.

Don't think of this as a plane but more like a Greyhound bus. You land in the morning at a destination, you do whatever want, then get back on the plane and fly to your next destination at night. Rather than having to sleep in crappy airline seats, you get a bed and everything.

They actually have sleeper buses and the idea is not new, from design idea for a Grey Hound Bus, found in a July 1935 issue of Modern Mechanix:
But, the idea never did seem to take off in the US, as most Americans drove their own cars. However, in countries where people needed to travel long distances and there were little in terms of personal car ownership, the idea took off and is still going strong. Most of these pictures were found on the net. They seem to be taken mostly in China, India, or South East Asia in general:

The idea never took off for the bus because people prefer to drive on their own. When it comes to travel by air, only a hand full of people have the privilege to fly their own planes.
    Great spam.
