I got an email today from a good friend telling me about his recent break-up with his girlfriend of 2.5 years. VERY SAD indeed. He gives his girlfriend a ride home every time they go out (typical) Last month, they went to a family gathering; on the way home, they were struck by a car that ran a red light. He got somewhat injured and his gf also felt pain on her back. They went to a hospital and everything was fine. He didn't hear from her until two weeks later; got a call from her lawyer suing him and the other driver for money. That hurts ..... He told me that from now on, don't give people a ride without making them sign a release form. I told him the same experience had happened to me before except it wasn't my gf but my colleague. I gave her ride home because we worked late hours. My car was rear-ended and she sued me for BACK pain .. wtf .. Thus, I don't give people ride home anymore unless they're close friend and family. I paid about ~$7100 for that accident.
Believe it or not; I do have one simple list form in my car that jot down name, date, and time of the riders who are not related to me with a blank space for them to sign acknowledging of their understanding of the form and releasing me of all liabilities. Otherwise, take the bus, walk, or whatever .. lol
it'll b embarasssing giving some1 liability form to sit in your car lol.....we'll its a lesson to learn..you can't trust anyone........its just bad luck that it happened and being the nice guy isn't always a goood thing
BAD Luck .. I am not so sure cuz ever since I moved here; I have heard quite a few cases already around my group of friends. I know two people that coughed up some money just to settle the case without wasting time in court. Hiring a lawyer ($$), filing forms ($$), witnesses ($$), etc .. sometimes those add up more than the plaintiff's request of settlement. I rather be embarrassed and upfront yet safe than being sued later.
r u gonna make copies of a liability form then put it in ur car and tell them to sign it before they get it? or you're gonna just do a one time thing for the ppl you drive regularly... well since you're the one driving and if they don't wanna sign its not your lost..they can take taxi
are you serious? people actually sue for these kinds of things? some things are just really different in the states. then again i've heard jokes about people suing for anything over 5$... i guess it is partly true.
^ yup a one time thing and it's a list .. excel sheet with the top stating the release of liability for all rides and breakdown to 4 columns - 4th column for signing .. clip board in my car somewhere.
wtf??!?!?! must only be in america? in nz thank gosh theres no sueing and shit. yet still i dont give people rides... gf yes, close mates yes, family yes everyone else can walk or bus their asses. man some people can be bastards... ex-gf being up there lol
ouch! that hurts. this incident never happened to me before, but it's a good lesson for all of us to learn. these days, it's hard to trust anyone, but your family and yourself. I was with my gf for more than 7 yrs and lent her drive my fixed up car, but thank god nothing went wrong. Maybe it's just me that I will never make my gf sign the liability release form because I love her and if she's that kind of a girl who will sue me for any damages, it tells me that she's not my the one for me.
it usually a lawyer who initiates the idea by saying "hey you can get compensation, just sue so-and-so, he gets paid win or lose. i wouldn't do this cus its stupid, plus i dont live in america where everyone sues everyone.
thats whats so bullshit about this compensation/suing culture and its filtering over to the UK where you can now sue for anything, even if its your own stupid fault....
WTH?!i never heard something like this. These people are just 'stealing' money because of the recession
Don't you just love America? It is indeed a land of opportunities... Your friend can look at it in a positive pov, imagine how worse it could be if they marry and later divorce. Freaking dumb courts allowing idiocies like this happening.
hahaha... it wouldnt even come to mind to sue a friend/colleague.... i mean i assume my friends wouldnt drive like idiots so, id just sue the other person who hit me but thats normal tho....
Yes .. the civil justice system has failed miserably ... to me .. these are all frivolous cases. Anyway, think of it this way, even the Samaritan Law no longer protects people who just wanna help you when you're in dangerous situation. I got CPR/First Aid certification so that I can help people but NO MORE. I will just walk on by .. forgive me cuz no way will I want to put myself or family into the potential lawsuit situation. It's not just about money but emotional stress too.
