A young boy is in a stable condition in hospital after falling through the roof of a derelict building into a vat of caustic soda. Police said the nine-year-old was playing football with friends on a car park in Rawmarsh, Rotherham, when he went to retrieve the ball from the roof of a disused workshop. He was climbing to reach the ball when the roof of the building gave way and the boy crashed through to the ground below, landing in a tank containing a chemical once used to strip furniture. The youngster was initially taken to Rotherham District General Hospital before being transferred to the burns unit at Sheffield Children's Hospital, where his condition is stable, South Yorkshire Police said. Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide, can cause severe burns, scarring and blindness. Resident Adrian Podmore, 27, who heard the boy scream for help said his skin had turned red. Mr Podmore said: "I thought he had been in a car crash at first because he was covered in what I was sure was blood. It was red and dripping from him, but it could have been the chemical now that I know what happened to him, but it did look like blood to me." The accident happened at around 5.45pm on Tuesday and is now being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive with assistance from police.

it's base. not acid. sodium hydroxide (OH). although that kinda defeats the purpose, since base gets so much underexposure in the media these days. i wonder how long he was in that thing, and how high concentration it is... it's not everywhere you can get hydroxide. maybe he'll get blindness but he can see in his head. o___O??
