My parents want to learn English and I want to buy some sort of DVD or audio tape that will help them but it has be cantonese or mandarin.

I remember watching on Jade World channel, they advertise a English lesson tapes for Cantonese speakers but that was a long-time ago. I guess it didn't turn so well because they don't advertise it anymore.

Can anyone help? I don't mind if it's imported.

usually, i would say it's hopeless to learn by yourself, since they might still need to work, lots of other family stuff to do, etc, you just can't concentrate. My GRANDPARENTS want to take the citizenship test so they gotta know the questions in English, *sigh* I was assigned to self-record every sentence on the book like that guy in "The Reader" does. All my grandma can still remember is calendar, pencil, pen, photocopy, monkey, monday, & tuesday, I taught those to her like 3 years ago. "Who is the first president of the United States?" I highly doubt they know what that means, even after i repeated myself in Cantonese 3 times.

Just start from the basic stuff, conversational things, there're many options you can pick online, my mom bought something call Pimsleur (so stupid of her, supposed to learn ENGLISH but bought the program where it teaches how to say Cantonese T______T)

foundation is very important after all...& avoid making English into Cantonese! omg it's funny but horrible at the same time.

I understand what your saying but they say want to learn it from a CD rather than having me lecture them. They know some basic English to understand what our neighbors are saying but they would like to know more and pronounce words correctly.

So wait, that links teaches you Cantonese, but it says "English for Cantonese Speaker?" >.<

Personally I think the best way is to learn by doing something you enjoy such as listening to music or watching movies or series in the language you want to learn since I can't think of anybody that doesn't like any of these. Self teaching wise I guarantee they get bored and give up especially if they come across something they don't understand (having something taught to you would be a different story) unless of course the person learning is moviated enough and isn't the type that would give up 1/2 way through.

My cousins and some friends from HK are learning English by listening to music and watching US dramas (with subs) =p and the things they learn really sticks into their heads.

no, the link i sent you is for Cantonese Speaker to learn English, don't worry.

that's good that they have some foundation already, thank god. yeah, do ask them to listen to some English songs from their generation. TV drama now would be kinda hard to adjust, since they speak so fast & no subtitle. LOL, if your mom likes to cook she can watch some cooking shows. I must admit that some portion of my English is from cooking shows I watched during weekends, they're awesome & delicious -chef

get them those digital dictionaries, the ones nowadays are so advanced!! my old one is black & white LOL.

My parents will never watch US drama so that stuff are out of the questions. Well actually my mom learns a lot of her English by listening to Bee Gees and Carpenter but that's the only English music she will listen to -sweat

My mom actually does watch cooking shows but how much she pay attentions to what they actually saying is the problem. She even watches Anthony Bourdain on Travel Channel. Seems to me she guess what's happening but maybe she's pick up a couple of words >.<

The audio cd is more for my Dad who knows a lot less than mom.

understandable definitely, it's hard to adjust. As long as they have the heart to learn it, it's good. Let them get use to the language itself, then the content, "basil", "oven", LOL. I dislike spanish shows, but i still gotta force myself to listen to it sometimes, YO NO ME DOY POR VENCIDO!

I don't know, for me, in the end English just magically becomes part of me.

Try rosetta stone, it costs a lot but u can download a cracked one on BT. I think it is really good because it has a voice recognition function, so you will know if u are saying the word wrong.
