    I always prefer Lenovo brand.
They have a 15%, 25% off sale on Lenovo.ca right now and FREE shipping.
$800 will get you a mighty powerful laptop/notebook.

Well, then your laptop would have to be 695 or less before tax which really leaves you with some sub par laptops.

I'd say Lenovo too, but only the ThinkPad line if you're not looking for a netbook.

Maybe a SL400 or SL500 or possibly even the T series.

Stay away from HP and Toshiba - they're crappy quality. Sony's overpriced.

Just an update. I ended up buying a used (mint condition, previous owner bought it 7 months ago) Lenovo Y510 Ideapad for $500 cdn. It's a core-2 duo T5750 2.0 GHz, 2G ram, 250G hd. It came with Vista Home Premium but I wiped it and installed xp pro sp3 and it runs like a charm. I am very happy it so far. Any thoughts?

    you should have waited.

today (30,July 2009) Lenovo has a 15% sale on their SL series Thinkpads, 25% off on more expensive models.
    for example:

a 14" or 15" notebook with a T6570 CPU(2.1Ghz) goes for $509Cdn, for $610 you get a P8600 CPU( 2.4Ghz).[ includes Vista premium...FREE UPGRADE to Windows 7 when it becomes avaible. ] FREE shipping to Canada.

I think the FREE Wiindows 7 alone worth $50+.

I too suggest Lenovo....quite fast and the wifi is strong. One things for sure it doesnt have to be expansive to be good quality but stick to xp should be fine.

    T5750 to T6760 is only 100Mhz more, shouldn't make much of a difference, for certain people, $100 is $100, is not like everyone can afford it; plus OP bought it $500 straight up, whereas buying from lenovo u will have to pay the recycle fee + both taxes;

    in case you dont know,
IDEALPAD is the cheap clone version of Thinkpad. quality-wise no comparison.

I dont know if u own any laptop before, the failure rate is pretty high, I prefer brand new with full warranty, thank you.
    SL500 also has HDMI-out

    BTW:

T5750 CPU has a FSB of 667MHz,CENTRINO 1, 65nm die, runs hotter ---older tech.

T6570 has FSB of 800MHz, CENTRINO 2, 45nm die, cooler
