Years ago, when I was still a young man, I was in the US military. I remember talking to another soldier as young soldiers frequently do; we talked about women, the best girlie bars, the quality and performance of hookers and prostitutes the world over. I recall men used to look forward to rotation to certain duty stations simply because of the better quality of the prostitutes in certain countries. At that time, it was during the 1970's and I recall a sergeant waxing nostalgically about the Mama-sans (what hookers were called in the ROK); about how you can score a sex act for just pennies on a dollar. After growing up a tad and looking beyond the prurient, I realize now that there a real people involved here. Not just a commodity that one uses and then easily discards. Another realization was that the Korean hookers that a former sergeant was so fond of, are simply much harder to find as the Korean economy took off. ROK women simply don't need to sell their bodies any longer in order to put food on their tables. The bulk of the hookers found in Korea nowadays, are Filipino, Russian, and Chinese. This leads me to another lament. Prostitution is a shameful practice forced on people who generally have no other economic recourse. If China has become such a powerful economic engine, why haven't Chinese women yet benefited enough so that they can stop being prostitutes. In many different parts of the world, the latest and largest wave of dispossessed working either on their backs or on their knees is the young Chinese woman. China has become the world's supplier of just about everything; should this include the selling of our women? This to me, is tremendously heart breaking. China is LARGE, not everyone received the same benefits, esp. due to corruption, not just China. Some people do it for self-pleasure, some do it for the family cuz there's no other way, whatever the reason is. China really isn't that powerful at this point imo. It's gonna be the same for the next generations, since sex has became this open. I guess the one of many ways to stop prostitution is to develop a shot that will stop men from being this sexual =p or ask God to make everyone to not be selfish, so they can stick with just one person, sinners
I remember years ago, when I traveled in the far east, the primary source of working girls was from the PI or Thailand. Now, it seems that the bulk of the "ladies" are from China. I'm not debating the social raison d'etre; just noting that I'm a bit saddened to see it happening to people to which I'm ethnically connected. I just hope that the trickle down wealth in China happens a bit more quickly so that less of its people would need to rely on such a calling.
I don't think prostitution will ever be eradicated, even wealthy countries like UK and America have their share of people in the sex trade. I guess its worse off in the developing countries.
I feel you man, China as a country might be doing well thats only because the profits that companies make within that country stays there. But many parts of China is poor and athe only way for ppl to make money is to get out there and scarifice alittle for thier family. But i totally agree We shouldnt be selling our women
everyone countries have their issues and problem, it just sad there are more poor countries that need the help
Or, let me phrase it another way; I just wish there was more opportunity for the young Chinese girl so that she doesn't need to choose prostitution as a career option. My comment isn't about prostitution's reason for existence; ie. bad men, bad women, loose morals, et cetera. I'm talking economics. Obviously, prostitution seems to be a viable and attractive option for thousands of Chinese women given however and whatever their individual financial situation. That is, women don't become prostitutes because they want to, rather they are forced to (economically) because they have very little other choice. Hence, what I am saying is, that I find it abhorrent and not just a bit emotionally distressing that so many Chinese woman, find prostitution to be economically attractive in the first place; to the point that the bulk of the world sex industry now seems to be supplied by China. That for me, is not the kind of market share to garner ethnic pride.
