My cpu won't boot and make a long beep sound, what's wrong?

I don't know what's wrong with my computer. It won't boot up and make this long annoying beep. I checked the power supply and everything is working fine. I googled the prob and came back with something's wrong with the RAM. Do I have take it apart? I am not computer expert here. Help.

It was working fine yesterday. Today, suddenly, nothing seems to work. I can't even enter BIOS.

Sounds like a serious problem, I really think you should hire an expert for this since you can't do anything apart from fixing the computer's physically.

what i don't get is why it was fine and now like this ..

i think if i can at least load it up or enter bios .. i can figure out what's wrong.

know how i can do that?

  4. you can't enter bios at this point unless you see the very first screen when booting up.

if your screen is blank, there's not much you can do but diagnose the physical components

what i would do is unplug all of the unnecessary components (cd drives, graphics card, sound card, floppy, hell, even the HD too since you only need to boot in bios) and leave the bare minimum (power supply, mobo, ram)

try and boot up, and toggle between rams and see if its because your ram is fried. rotate and test rams one by one. or get a new, fresh ram and try it.

if its not the ram, then its the mobo or cpu

    motherboards probably gone :/

  6. happened to a crappy pc we once had, my verdict, its the beggining of the end of your computer.

  7. @hotwings how do you know? have you personally checked his pc?

@mg, i have a crappy pc i own for like... 10 years. still going strong.

  8. the beep sound means the motherboard has failed the POST so it's all hardware at this point, definitely take what Dan suggested and test out your RAM, also you can look up what the beeping means usually 1 long beep is followed by shorter beeps...

    The_Jelly NSFW? :P

Yeah, if you were to hire a so called expert they would probably do what Dan has suggested. If you're not comfortable taking apart your computer like that then by all means hire someone.

  10. no i dont mean crappy as in low spec, i mean crappy as in it did 3 different warning beeps when you turned it on and it was totally messed up, the guy who made it for us used defective parts. couldn't be bothered with it, just decided to never do business with the guy again, only consolation was the computer being cheap anyway.

  11. ^ why'd you let someone else build your pc?

  12. there was once a time when i couldn't put a computer together on my own and to be honest, putting computers together has never really appealed to me. my current pc is alienware, could of been cheaper if i did it myself but it will become my own as i upgrade it over time

Thanks ya'll. I spent the morning taking everything apart and nothing seems to be the problems. They all appeared intact sorta speak. I don't understand what's wrong .. it just won't boot and the beep is still there .. it's RAM but I used one from another computer and it's still the same.

ok so to get another stick of ram, is "BEST" to buy the same speed of ram you have inside your system now (ie. if you have DDR333 (aka PC2700), get another stick with the same speed; technically U CAN get a DDR400 (aka PC3200) and the system will step down to use at DDR333 speed, but some older systems won't boot for this matter); good to know it works now
