Security vs Convenience?

Nowadays we can check all our emails from different providers at one place (gmail, yahoo, etc) so it's very convenient. However, one of my concern is the SECURITY. It appears that these providers are always coming up with products to make our lives easier and convenient yet lacked the security area. Not sure if ya'll agree. What if someone gained access to that very account to where I normally checked all my mails? I can't imagine the consequences. After all, we communicate a lot of personal stuffs through emails too so that's out the window sorta speak. Bottom line, do ya'll think it's a good idea to merge everything into one place? Perhaps someone here can shed some lights on the matter. I am not updated since I am not in the industry.

I personally haven't done so because I felt the security system is still too fragile.

    unless you have very important stuff in the email account otherwise it wouldn't be an issue; for example, if you receive a link saying that your credit card statment is available online now, BUT when you click the link, it will ask for your login/password in order to gain access to it, so i don't see a problem with the security;

well .. true .. banks might do that to insure their customers but our emails aren't just used for banks .. job, school, shopping, etc...

our name, address, phone number, birthday, etc .. can be included in the email which will be easily accessible if someone crack that master email sorta speak. those info are just as important.

what can they do with your name, address, phone number, birthdate? i sign up a lot of things, and rarely those info are included (most will give u a link, need you to sign in, in order to view personal info); unless you are buying something and the receipt shows BUT u probably get some spam to ur address and phone, they can't really do anything to it; if ppl find security is an issue, people won't even use the Internet, everyone just go back to pen & paper =)

plus if were you why are personal email account contain where you work? if the email is work related, then it should have been sent via the work email account and personal / work things should not be mixed anyway; as for shopping, the credit number info section wouldn't show the entire 16-digit anyways

NO! imagine if u need to provide a password on each email u click into and each email has to be different password, where is the convenience; just like the computer systems in the government, each password are created randomly and the office workers have to use them on a daily basis and ppl have wrote it down and place it in different sticky notices under the keyboard, on the monitor etc, where is the "convenience"? too secure will just make ppl stressed out; i have worked in that environment

By the way, the security issues has nothing to do with consolidating all emails in one account. It is an issues even if you have multiple email accounts, as most people do.
Convenience does conflict with secuity all the times. For example, your bank allows you to transfer money to other bank's account for convenience, but that sacrifice security since if somebody get access to your password (via spyware, trojan) it is easier for them to steal your money. I wish my bank would allow me to disable that feature.

address, phone no - u probably get more spam in those
birthdate - sure but i will need ur full name, address, phone number along with certain info to able to do stuff
college id - who cares, what can they do?

but if anyone is concerned, they have a choice to stop using the convenient Internet, i have used the Internet since 16 yrs ago and i have way more information in my email that relates to me purchasing online all over the world ... trust me ... like a ton, at least 5x more than normal users, and yet i have yet had anything taken or money loss due to convenience; all my friends have had credit card being used by elsewhere without consent or stole, yet none to me;

i think emails are hardly a place to get your identity tbh...
icoz if u sign up for an email you dont have to give every single thing about u...

more worrying is the profile sites like facebook, twitter etc..

most of your personal details like address and phone numbers and account numbers wouldn't normally be put on your email anyways

i only think fb isn't safe because one is "smart" in filling all the real info in; why would u want to post pics of youself as i have seen (if some1 died due to an accident, the newspaper got the photos on fb and post it) or in many cases, everyone put everyone on it just like they own the page or something; i never have a picture of myself on fb nor any real information; good luck for those looking to hack my page =0

^ i guess its up to the person whether they want to exploit themselves to the situation and whether you are discrete enough to cause people to take your identity away from you

relating ot the OP only thing that is mostly something to do with identity fraud is online billing and that doesn't even give enough info out

Not sure what you meant by online banking. I have stock brokerage accounts and I access them all the times. There is no way for me to disable online fund transfer capability as far as I know. Now they do provide security procedures such that when you authorize an external account for money transfer, there is a waiting period and they will send a letter to your mail address to notify you of the established external account etc. so you will be aware of it. However, if you happen to be on vacation and cannot check your mails, then you are out of luck.

Even though internet technology has advance alot, I suppose it's still back to ourselves where we need to be prudent and careful with out personal information. If we're talking about emails with personal or confidential or sensitive informations, we'll then have to use traditional methods to send information across. Otherwise, whatever you put in your email accounts should only be something that you alone are able to understand.
Otherwise keep them out so that you have a more peaceful mind. We can never eliminate or set the security levels to the highs as that works inversely proportional with convenience. We can't be too careful or can't have too strict of security just like out accomodations, however good you are in locking your doors, there's always a way to break open... So keep your important things where they should be.
I personally use several email accounts but the personal and important ones i have different passwords and change them often for my own security sake... But if someone is so good to be able to hack that, then i'm really unlucky...

then go back to the in-person stock brokerage accounts, like you go to the branch to do buy/sell or call them, back to the old days  when OP is mentioning about security, but as long as each and every account you access via the web has security procedures (login/password) i don't see too much of a thread

^ some people r just plain lazy or apparentky too busy to enter their branch to do it the old fashion way tho...
