Hi, I am looking for a free application that will translate simplified chinese to tranditional chinese in real time under IE8. In other words, this application runs in the background so when I invoke IE8 and visit websites displaying simplified chinese, I will see traditional chinese instead. In the past, I had been using a free version of NJStar communicator and it worked OK. However, once upgraded from IE7 to IE8 it no longer works, so I am looking for a new one that should work under XP & Vista. Thank you very much in advance.

lol, can't you select the encoding in IE8?
Right click white space in IE --> Encoding --> More --> Traditional (Big5)

Have you tried that on simplified chinese web sites? It doesn't work for me, or I wouldn't need special software. That's also why those web sites often provide a button for simplified or traditional display. Also even if it works, just changing page will restore the display back to the native simplified chinese encoding and you don't want to do that for each page anyway.
The encoding selection is only for IE to understand what encoding system is used on the site. It is NOT a translator that translates between the two.

It's not automatic, but it's at least one click away.

    - Go to http://translate.google.com/translate_tools?hl=en .
    - Scroll down to "Get 1-click translations from your browser's toolbar".
    - Click on "Chinese (Traditional)" to add it to your Favorites.
    - Go to your Favorites and right-click on "Chinese (Traditional)".
    - Select "Add to Favorites Bar".

Maybe Google Toolbar has an automatic option, but you can test that yourself I guess :)

P.S.: I cannot read Chinese, so I can't comment on the quality of the translation.

Hi noasain, I mentioned translate in a number of places in my original post.
I have the standard chinese fonts in my IE (MingLiu?) so I can read traditional and simplified chinese on those sites. It's just that I read traditional chinese much faster than simplified chinese so I want an automatic translator running in the background.

I tried. It is not working very well. First it is more than one click (click favorite and then select that). More importantly it takes a bit of time to translate after the selection (only a few seconds). It does seem to translate well. However, the worst part comes when I click on any link on that page, it somehow just went crazy and comes up with weired display (wrong encoding etc.). I have to play with it more, but it doesn't look that good.
With the old NJStar communicator software, I simply need to click once to invoke it to run in the background, then it will automatically translate all web sites that display simplified chinese to big5, as well as any other applications display (e.g. notepad/Word display of simplified chinese file). It will leave sites displaying big5 alone without translation and the translation is almost instant (no lag time like the google translator). I don't know why it stopped working from IE7 to IE8.

technically there is no "translation" if is simplified to traditional, but i get what you mean...hahaha

    - have you tried to use the compatibility view to run pages?
    - is your computer installed with east asian language pack?
    - if you are having issues, have you consider going back to IE7 instead?
    - if NJStar is working, why change the process =)
    - if you are impatient on the "little lag" i can't help it sorry

Answers to your questions are included above.
So are you saying that right now, if you visit a mainland chinese web site with its native display being in simplified chinese, you can just see it in big5 by just right click and select encoding to be big5?

The mainland sites I visited can be classified into 3 types:

    (1) Some offer a button for selecting big5 display, and it also remembers that next time you visit it (put in cookie?). However, it only remembers that for a certain period of times (may be days or weeks).

    (2) Some offer a big5 button, but clicking the button yielded no effect (button doesn't work).

    (3) Many just do not offer such button.

Uhhh, in that case I don't think you followed the last 2 steps of my instruction:
    - Go to your Favorites and right-click on "Chinese (Traditional)".
    - Select "Add to Favorites Bar".

Unless you removed your Favorites Bar or something, it should appear next to the Favorites button. So there is no need to go into Favorites in order to click the link.

Like I mentioned before, feel free to try Google Toolbar to see if they have anything that is bit more automatic. Otherwise save some money and buy NJStar if all else fails :) (at least you will then be entitled to get support from them).

Thanks for all the suggestions. However, like I said in above post, it just went mad when I continued to click on more link from the first page and the google translator no longer worked. Even if it is a button on the favorite bar right on the top, it doesn't help much (yeah, you are right, I don't like the favorite bar on top). I guess I can always go back to IE7 or try other browser.
I am sure there are other free application that will work just like the NJStar one.

Well, all sorts of sites including news, novels etc. It really doesn't matter, ALL mainland sites display in simplified fonts natively.
So are you saying that after you installed the east asia language pack, when you visited mainland sites, you could automatically read those sites in big5 display?
