So i recently formatted my desktop to windows 7. but theres a problem when i go to turn on the computer. i have 2 external harddrives, but the computer wont turn on with them plugged in. i have to unplug the 2 USB cables and then press the restart button inorder for it to turn on. :stickpoke: This didnt happen when i was with windows XP before i formatted the computer. any help will be appreciated. are you saying the entire computer will not power on at all? or are you not getting past the POST? or if it does power on where does it hang?
that's weird...have you tried sumthing else instead of external hd? wat if you plug a usb stick in? do you get the same results? also try updating all the drivers and see what happens...if not i guess downgrade back to xp?
sorry for the lack of information.... well i press the power button, it powers up, then i see the black screen, then the "page" that shows ASUS and my motherboard model. and it just hangs there. any ideas?? -unsure I havent tried a USB yet, but i've updated everything. or atleast i think i have. windows XP... that install disk is somewhere not to be found.....
drivers? for.... one of my 2 externals is a WD BOOK 500gb. the other one is a DIY enclosure. the computer wont turn on with either of them plugged in.
Boot-up without them plugged in, then plug them in and update drivers. Reboot to see if it worked. That's what I would try at any rate.
xp and win7 are different in that way, when i used xp and vista my external HDD's turned off when i turned my pc off, now with win7 they stay on as long as they are connected to the pc so i have to manually turn the HDDs off by their switch, luckily i dont need to use them much. just check your boot order, C:/ first then CD, dont let it try to boot from the externals, maybe that will help, if not then just boot with the externals unplugged.
where i was trying to go with the answer to my question... it might try seeking OS files from your external hard drives....and reading from such large volumes takes a lot of time..... so make sure your boot order goes CD-ROM first than HDD 2nd... that mostly all you really need.... unless you still have floppys .....
indeed look in the boot sequence maybe it is looking for usb install sometimes u better not connect usb devices when u install new system
ohhh yeahhhhh, i remember floppys, i used to carry a case of 40 to college for my downloads along with software to split large files, so much hassle but good memories, especially when you got home and the stuff was still actually on the floppys >.<
Oh those were the good old days ... floppies and DOS ... when most people knew what they were doing with a Microsoft OS And never mind 3.5" floppies, how about the 5.25" ones ? Oh well, you kids wouldn't understand that -cool2 P.S.: I still have a USB 3.5" floppy drive for certain occasions. It's difficult to let go.

Glad to hear that. Keep in mind though that if you ever need to access a USB device during boot time or inside of a DOS environment (before Windows starts), then you need to turn this on again.
