very down, i dont know if i took the right decision going to university studying computer system security degree

i just dont seem to understand the concept of programming visual studio java pyton, I ve find them very very hard understanding them asked many friends to help, lectures explains things same ways a member of PA called "Dan" no offence to Dan or anything(posted help in hw section reguards to python)

To have soo many people helping me explaining programming with additional lecture notes and resource but still dont understand programming does that mean and show signs Im not the type of person for University

Im very angry and really feel to cry, some people around university get pissed drunk everyday and still gradaute with excellent marks where as me im trying my socks off yet to see my efforts all a waste

i know many of my family member said as long i tried my best its fine doesnt matter if i graduate or not but the things that bothers me if i put so much effort in studying with a very serious manner towards it which i never have before in high school and college yet seems to reflex im stupid worthless donkey dull pointless i ve in a very bad mood lately

its 1am now i still havent finish my python assignment which due in 2moz at 2pm i dont know what to do hope god bless me

Have you asked yourself if this is what you want to do as a career choice? I failed miserably in my first college year in Electrical Engineering for computer programming. I took a year off and reassessed my education and career decision. I reapplied to a different college for the similar course and passed with flying colours.

Don't worry. I assume you're still a young dude. You still have time to make choices and decide on your future.

  3. I apologize for not understanding your situation in the other thread. You see, being in software development, I did not just want to hand you the answers to your assignment, for fear that it would harm your studies by doing so.

Not to discourage you, but programming is not for everyone. It's like me and biology, there is no way for the life of me, can I become a doctor. I just can't.

But if you do want to continue in programming, let's forget about what happened in the other thread, and I'll try to help you.

I don't appreciate being called a "tool" when trying to help though >_>

Well im 20 atm i havent skipped any year pretty much on course in life atm, and yeh it is what i aim for. why? because technically speaking computer is the ONLY thing im good at and got high grades in gcse n college, Studing computer system security in uk and im struggling big time with the programming modules, and my networking security modules which plays a huge part in programming using java visual studio and python which is my downside the rest of the 4 modules are networks, forensic analysis, cryptography etc...all seem fine i can cope i got to attend court day on friday giving evidence too but yeh just those two modules bring me down major when im trying 120% in both of them and doesnt seem to make any progress

yeh same i apologize for that too, i take that word back, im sorry, was very stressed and angry at the time, tbh i think programming is a hit or a miss, someone get taught and can either slowly sink in where as other will be just blunt that me. Anyway thanks dan its ok now I given up i tried my best with question 3 and 4 i documentated the other 2 programs ive done with screenshot making them look pretty lol forgot to mention that assignment included a essasy which worth 30 marks which hope can push me up a little, the python worth 50 marks huge chunk thats why i wanted to try get 3 done at least but oh well nevermind, it 3am in uk now been working it for a full 12 hours >.< since i finish uni today i am very very tired :(

So you do enjoy programming right?
I mean com'on Uni. of Glamorgan is more lenient than other unis with their markings especially with the whole 40% pass situation
But then I do understand the whole failing but trying your hardest situation... Most of my law assignments are done half heartedly but to the ones I don't understand I do put 110% into it but always get worse marks than the one which I don't put any effort too :(
I think it's just Treff that is putting us down xD

    consider doing part time uni
that way u don't have to do so many subjects at the one time, and u'll have more time to focus on what all this software development is all about
given that u'll have a lot more free time - spend that time to read more and understand the "core" behind all this programming.

in simple terms, all programming comes down to logic, and if u can't work out the logic, it doesn't matter what language u use, u'll never get the results u want

Yes, programming is hard. You have to think really think a lot. An important thing is you have to think of the algorithm before writing the code. Don't start right away. Try to write down the process down on a piece of paper first. Hope this will help. Good luck.

So, are you a programmer now?;)

switch out of CS, or change what you want to specialize in within Computer Science.

If you're getting your ass handed to you this early in the game, 3rd and 4th year assignments are gonna fuck you up.

I started off wanting to get into pharmacy and now here i am 6 classes away from completing my Business degree lol.

Its definitely worth taking a step back and analyzing some alternatives. What you're doing is not the be-all end-all of jobs, you have a shitload of options in University.

I tried computer programming and found it was not for me. It was like learning a foreign language.
I am currently learning machine profiling in electronics manufacturing. There are lots of things to remember like input commands and precise measurements but it is not as overwhelming.

i agree with fearless, a lot of people realise that the subject they picked at university isn't right for them. my friend was studying the same degree as me but has now changed to japanese and enjoys it a lot more. there is always the option to change. however, from what u've said u've done the first year and ur into ur second year and it's only those 2 specific modules that ur not enjoying. furthermore, u stated that u previously did well in IT and enjoyed it. this suggests to me that u should have picked the right subject. however, even then ur always going to experience hard modules which u don't enjoy and programming i guess is one of them for u. all it means is that next year when u get to pick ur choice of modules avoid the programming part if u can and choose modules that u enjoy. alternatively, u said u've put in a lot of effort and u still don't understand it, sometimes this happens, but in the end a lot of the time the hard work u put in will pay off and eventually u will understand the topic.

Hey I know being a uni student is very stressful!! You get so much work to do and eveything is up to you to complete like coursework ans assignments. Well just becasue you are not good at a certain area of your course doesn't mean you are not suited to study this course.

I think you should really think why you are at uni and is there any aspects of your course that you enjoy.
Most importantly you should really enjoy uni its such a great experience meeting new people and trying new things :)

Basicly what do you want at the end of your degree? What kind of job are you trying to pursue?
All these questions matter and once you habve found your decision you will see your path to success ( haha this sounds really cheesy) anyway I hope everything goes well and GOOD LUCK!

My advice is for you to take a break. I graduated from high school NOT knowing what I want to do. But to satisfy my parents, I went to study Biology. Did that for 1 year. I hated it. I sucked at it. I failed it. I transferred schools to do Economics. I'm good with economics, I keep up with it, I read about it and I understand it. But in class, I hated it. The work is boring, the professors are boring, and then when I got deeper into economics, I found that I didn't understand the different branches of economics. What did I do?

I took a semester off. I sat down and found out what I really wanted to do. Now I'm in another school studying advertising and graphic design. It's awesome. The classes are awesome, the professors are awesome and the work is awesome. I'm banging out good grades and I'm freelancing. I've never even been great at art, although I doodle here and there. But that's what college is all about, it's training you in getting the job you want. I'm graduating at the end of this year and I can't fcuking wait. I've picked up photography on the side and doing art related things to my major. My parents are proud of what I'm doing even though it's not anything hospital or law related ;)

What I'm trying to say is, just because your good at something doesn't mean it'll make you happy. Sit down. Think about it and if you want to, transfer and do something else that you really like while your still only knee deep.

Dont worry about it man! I graduated with a MAth & Computer Science degree and didnt like it. I was forced into by my family. Get out of programming man, unless u want to become a developer. Get into Networking man that is where all the monies at. U can go either Cisco, which is mostly in the west coast or Microsoft. I would get into Microsoft networking and u can become a server administrator. Dont worry, i took a long time to graduate cause i failed chinese 103 and had to wait an whole entire year to retake it. Get good grades man or u will regret it. Get an intern while at school and go to your career center at school. I didnt know they had that in school. Keeep ur head up and never give up!

This is good advice. I'd also like to remind most you (if your in the US) a degree nowadays is almost useless without the experience. A internship or co-op is a FANTASTIC tool to have under your belt. I would do at least 2 to 3 internships for the experience. I'm not sure how it is in the computer science field, but in the art, graphic design field, it's becoming more and more common that experience and real skills become more marketable than a GPA and a degree. Food for thought.

That might might not be right for you. I've always wanted to be a pharmaceutical scientist/engineer. I didn't get the grades I wanted so I was trying out a different field. I'm majoring in physics now and I'm doing pretty good so far. If everything goes well, I should be done next year.

So my advice to you is try to other fields. The classes you've taken so far may not go to waste.

Programming is just like learning another language, some people can do it and others cannot. Those that cannot have a long hard path to take to learn it the hard way and that means putting in 100x more effort than those that can pick it up easier

I understand you completely. I'm also in second year studying ICT which is nothing but programming, telecoms and design. I'm so crap at programming, i need my mates to walkthrough it with me. But for me, Idk y but i feel as if I had lost interest at it all..but as the rest have mentioned, maybe I need to reassess my options, take a year out or somethin and do something else..
