i5 Vs i7 vs AMD?

So, my desktop has finally hit the 4 year mark. Its an old Pentium D with only 2 gb ram, xp, and a 7600 GS. I've decided to build a new one this summer. With all the blu-ray and HD stuff being released my computer has been having problems with 1080p playback. I did consider overclocking the Pentium D but I don't think it would help much. Anyways, when looking at CPU's I noticed that the i7's only differed in price with the i5's by a hundred dollars, give or take a few. I also did some research on quad cores and there seems to be very little significant increase in performance in general, with the exception of video encoding and stuff like that. I figured since I'm making a new computer I won't be planning to upgrade anytime in between so would be it better for me to get a i5 or an i7? Btw, I'm talking about the dual core i5's. I also looked at the AMD quads and they seem to give a much better price:performance ratio. However, I'm not planning to upgrade anything in the near future, so would it be better to future-proof by going for the i7? Oh yeah, my budget is about $1200, though I can probably go over a little. Thanks in advance. I appreciate any feedback. :D

i would assume u are only comparing with the i7-920? what model are you looking at?
i would have the best price across Canada on the i7-870/950/960 CPUs, they are $550 each shipped whereas 870 starts at $599 at the lowest from shops

I was kinda looking at the 920 and 860. Can you explain as to why there is such a big price difference with the 950, 870?

The reason buying the i7 950 or above is for future proof, because it is said the hex core is compatible with the socket 1336, and also, the Bus/Core Ratio is greater compared to the 920's

  5. whoa what?! 550 for a cpu?? up in canada? what.......?

  6. going with the i7 is definitely future proof, i personally have a i7-920 and it definitely is worth it. just make sure when you buy the motherboard it's the right socket and if you are going i7, triple channel ram!

Yeah, the i7 is gonna cost me an arm and a lag with the expensive mobo and ram I gotta pair it up with.

  8. puahah i have an i7 that just cost me an arm and a leg want to buy?

Apparently DDR3 ram should be in multiples of 3 for better performance of w/e. So I either get 3 or 6 .. -_-;;.
I never really planned to OC. If I wanted to do that, I would go for the Phenom.

mmm i'd probably get the I7-930, they are the exact same price anyway.

1200 bucks is more than enough to build a top of the line system... i was playing around with this just yesterday.

That doesn't include monitors :p but i know tigerdirect has a nice i-inc 28" monitor going for around $320, which would bring your total to like $1500, for a computer that should last you the next 5 years for sure.

Oh also, when you pick a motherboard, choose something that supports USB 3.0. ^^

If you're looking to save yourself like 300 dollars in your budget though, I'd just go with AMD:

In terms of a performance loss... i seriously doubt you're losing much between this 965 black and an i7 930 unless you're a very heavy user. Although, if you do alot of photo/video editing, the i7 is probably the way to go... with the hyperthreading tech, the i7 shows up as 8 logical cores instead of just 4, so you technically have twice the processing power with intel.

At this point... I would be hard-pressed deciding between whether to go with spending more money on the i7 and 1366 socket mobo, or saving 300 bucks with an AM3 mobo and the 965 and then spending the extra money on a 60gig SSD. :ugh:

cuz all you cheapees buying the 920 and that is going out of the marketing soon...$550 for that cpu is the cheapest, on one store can beat that price before/after taxes...

not really technically...i9 is in testing stage already
however for those who doesn't have a quad core u can say is future proof?
    my q6600 is quad too...

Yeah, I'm still trying to find a good small SSD as a boot drive. The 965 and the i7-930 are only $100 apart. I might just go with it, but then the ram and mobo are gonna kill my wallet lol.

  13. lol.... definitely go with the 930....... microcenter was selling it for 200 a few weeks back..... what a steal..

  14. anything above a 920-930 is not worth the price here in canada, we dont have microcenter and we are too smart not to overclock our 920 d0 and save $1000

lol s'okay, im not building a new computer for atleast another year :p hopefully by then the newer cores will come down in price from like 500 to like 150 :kekekegay:

I'm waiting on SSD's to come down in price and DDR4 ram to be released in 2011 bahaha

it really depends on where you are getting it...not worth when shops have it $600-700 + taxes...but is slightly different from me...
or go with the low end dual xeon CPU, i am going that route on my next build...
and getting parts shipped here is subject to taxes (if no duties...), and warranty issues, probably not worth buying

    Intel Xeon Processor X3430 @ $195 Shipped

  17. ddr4.... man, i already got 6gb of ddr3 triple channel so if i were to buy ram i think ill just get another 6gb :p

SSD..... once they drop in price... im booting my current hd to storage status and using the ssd as my primary os keeper....

what i would like to see come out more is the usb 3.0 support.... damnit, i don't wanna pay so much for a 3.0 compatible device

doubt it would drop too much in price since usb1.1 is still around. most webcams are and usb3.0 isn't that expensive, WD 1TB ext. hdd about $150
