BOSTON -- Three Everett middle school students hospitalized after drinking melted dry ice were expected to be OK after being rushed to the hospital Thursday, and one of them said he's learned an important lesson about taking dares. The students at the Sumner Whitter Middle School ingested the ice during a sixth-grade science class after the boys dared each other to drink the toxic carbon dioxide. They did, and all three had to be rushed to Children's Hospital. "We didn't even think. We were just daring each other. And I dared my friend to do it -- it didn't turn out good," Herman Sheriff, 12, told NewsCenter 5. The stunt could have killed them. Dry ice, often used to keep food frozen, is really carbon dioxide. "Five minutes later my rib cage started to hurt. But then it went away, because we drank it after the ice melted," Sheriff said. He said the ice had been mixed with sand and water as part of an experiment. The principal explained that the students were working on an experiment on gases. "Very carefully, with a rubber glove, (they) took a piece of dry ice and put it in the beaker with the water. The students had a balloon, they took the balloon and put it over the top of the beaker and watched what happened. The balloon expanded and the water bubbled," Helen MacLaughin said. The same reaction occurred in the boys' stomachs. They were rushed to the hospital to prevent internal ruptures. "It's like something squeezing inside my stomach," Sheriff said. "I told them not to do it because, like, I said it was a dumb idea and it was just ... foolish," classmate Tayla Pasquariello said. "I learned that I should never drink something that I don't know about. That's Lesson One. Lesson Two: never take your jokes too far," Sheriff said. He and another boy were at home recovering Thursday night, but a third child was still hospitalized for observation. Sheriff's mother said she has some questions about how well the boys were being supervised. Source --- Yummmmmy
ijits, we used to dare each other to use the glue gun on ourselves, burnt off my friends finger, took ages to heal
stupid retards. they deserved it. or how about, how are you raising your stupid child, dumbass..... how? there's about 30 students in a class, and he/she has to worry about teaching too.. how do you keep an eye out for stupidity? he/she might have had her back turned at that point to help other kids, so i dont see how he/she is at fault why dont we ban everything dangerous from school. that seems to be the trend lately. [/sarcasm]
ohh your a boy!!, i thought you was the girl on your profile -bigsmiles i take back what i said thenuke:
Ahh.. Dares... The good old game! Never knew dry ice was actually CO2 I once dared my friend to eat all the insects and catures that we found in the school playground, including the ones at the pond Funnily enough I didn't lose to do the dare haha
Ever heard of truth or dare? Hahaha. These kids took a bigger leap into daring. Without brains. Oh my, and what is the teacher doing? "I learned that I should never drink something that I don't know about. That's Lesson One. Lesson Two: never take your jokes too far," Sheriff said. ^ Nuff Said.
yes .. these kids acted stupid but the teacher should be blamed for a lacked of supervision. when you deal with kids that age, the teacher has to explain the lesson before distributing the "harmful" materials for experiment and should also request assistance - teach assistant or whatever to help with the lesson that particular day. kids acting dumb is very typical and the teachers know that ..
it's not whether the kids listen to the teacher or not; it's about not getting entangle with lawsuit for negligent or whatever .. there are crazy parents out there whose only goal is to torture you .. lol
