Not sure if this is the right place, but hopefully the anime experts (aka anime maniacs) frequent this forum as well. I'm looking for animes (series or movies) that are comparable with the likes of "Ghost in the Shell", Vexille, Texhnolyze, Jin-Roh or Appleseed. Basically something that an adult would enjoy ... and NO, I don't mean hentai!!! Any recommendations ?
im not that big anime fan... but there are few i really love: *Macross Frontier *Code Geass + Code Geass R2 *Gundam 00 + Gundam 00 S2 ohh... and the musics are really good !
Oh my ... you bring back memories from my childhood ... oops, so I am old ... lol ... anyway, these really remind me of the days of Voltron and Robotech. Macross Zero was the last one I watched, so not really up-to-date. Tanks for the recommendations. While still good animes, these are a bit more cartoonish compared to the likes of Ghost in the Shell or Appleseed (at least according to my taste). So more recommendations are welcome!
+ 1 to Macross Frontier. What you said is a bit vague, so I am guessing action, Sci-Fi, gunfights and near future to futuristic sorta thing. Some stuff that pops to mind that I've seen: Black Lagoon, Hellsing OVAs (TV Series suck), Cowboy Bebop and Michiko to Hatchin. Something on the mech side would be Full Metal Panic although that isn't solely focussed on mechs like Gaydam. Plus as with most animes they usually follow the manga and if it diverges, then it is usually a bad adaption (Rosario comes to mind) If your interested in Manga then you should check out Akumetsu which is something I recently read, this is pure awesomeness and I think it should suit your tastes.
Umm u can try elfen lied, baccano!, claymore, gantz, serial experiments lain, kurozuka, darker then black, death note?, witch hunter robin, and probably evangelion These anime are kinda dark and for mature people.
I'm going to have to second Code Geass. I just finished it today . It's really good. Also, the movies for Ghost in the Shell, I sometimes get lost as to what they REALLY mean though. I would also suggest the movie, Summer Wars. It didnt seem like an anime I would enjoy, but it was fairly entertaining.
Watch Bounen No Xamdou, it's main strength is character development. Although it lacks in action compared to other suggestions like Code Geass and Black Lagoon, I was pumped all the way through. If you liked Ghost in the shell series then you should check out the movies if you haven't already. Black Lagoon is also another good call for the older anime viewer. It has 2 completed seasons and the 3rd season is currently ongoing.
While I was waiting for feedback from you guys I decided to start watching Ergo Proxy. It remains to be seen whether that's any good or not. You are right, I should have explained a bit better what I am looking for. I think the main components I am looking for are: Conspiracy / Thriller, Sci-Fi, Cyborgs / Mechs, Action (e.g. good fighting scenes as shown in my link for Appleseed and the usual gun fights). On top of that I prefer CGI animated ones (e.g. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children), definitely not the cartoonish ones (with this I mean the childish painting styles which I guess would really be the original anime painting style) and I also prefer English dubbed ones. Furthermore I do not have much free time between work and family, so I need to be quite selective with my choices. So with this in mind, I went through the list you provided and Hellsing was the one that really attracted me. So I have put this on my wish list. Thanks for that! It somehow reminded me of PC games like "Return to Castle Wolfenstein". Full Metal Panic is something that I believe I have in my collection, but I never watched it since at the end it wasn't really my taste. And the only thing I read nowadays is the PC Gamer magazine to keep up-to-date with PC games, so no mangas for me. So I am not really worried about the mangas adaptations into animes. Uhhh, no kidding about the dark part Are you trying to scare me to death or what ? Death Note ... oh boy ... this I think was the only anime that I have ever watched in my life that managed to stress the hell out of me (in a bad way). Not sure what it was, but I think it's too repetitive between the episodes. I have to say though that it at least managed to force me to watch the ending. From your list I took Gantz and Serial Experiments Lain. I have my doubts about Darker than Black and Kurozuka though, but I'll keep them in mind. Code Geass looks fine, but not really my primary choice. And you are right about Ghost in the Shell (series + movies), the 1st time I watched it I was confused as hell. It only became more clear when I watched the English dubbed version. That's what I like about it though, it goes really deep into what it is trying to convey (more like philosophy really). Hmmm, something does attract me to this Bounen No Xamdou, so it will be cataloged for future use. Believe me, I have watched all there is to Ghost in the Shell Black Lagoon doesn't do it for me though, so I am going to skip that.
I just finished watching Gantz. The show pissed me off all the way through. Ending was the final straw -_- You could also check out Neon Genesis Evangelion and Rahxephon. Both are very similar in plot. Both involve mechas, conspiracy, and sci-fi. For Evangelion you can also choose to watch the movies. They're a re-telling of the story with new animation. I'd say the movies so far are more superior to the original series. There are 2 movies so far entitled... Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance There will be 2 more movies to be released to conclude the story. I would also recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Although the animation seems kiddy at first, it's an anime all ages can enjoy.
While following your tips I also found Pale Cocoon, Time of Eve and Reideen which I have put on my list. I think I have enough for the upcoming months -surr Well I only read good things about Gantz on the Internet, so I'll give it a try anyway. I just hope it's nothing like Death Note, otherwise I will become suicidal! Rahxephon seems interesting as well, so I believe I will give it a try if time permits. Thanks for clearing up that little detail for Evangelion. I wasn't going to try it out since I didn't want to spend time on a serie that was not on my A list, but I have time for movies though. I'll skip Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann for now though. The painting style is fine, but it's not really what I am looking for right now. Reminds me somehow of Dragon Ball (which btw I did like back then). They look good, but are not what I am currently looking for (even though High School of the Dead has lots of boobies in it )
Lol didnt mean to scare u like that but gantz is pretty good. I dont really prefer the anime of it but i love the manga and acutally i think the manga went on more while the anime stop but im not sure.
If anyone is looking for a weird and unique anime then check into Kaiba. It's a nice little anime no one really talks about, but it's pretty fascinating to watch.
That's weird alright! ... lol. That looks too artistic for me. I finally finished Ergo Proxy btw and it was really what I was looking for ... a total brain f$#@. My only mistake was that I watched the Japanese version which kind of prevented me to understand the full meaning of it all. So I'm going to watch it again, but this time in English. I haven't decided which one to watch next, but I guess Gantz and then Serial Experiments Lain. Thanks again for all the tips guys! P.S.: Just found out that the anime genre or category that I'm really after is "cyberpunk".
