I have been wondering about this for quite some time now.
Why are the majority of the tvb releasegroups still using the rmvb format. Its old and crappy. h264 > rmvb.

I guess its old, but not necessarily crappy. It gives respectable file sizes considering the quality of the video.

Please don't confuse video codecs with containers, rmvb is a container and h264 is the video codec. Meaning if I wanted to I could mux in a h264 or xvid in a rmvb container.

Not necessary old since they are updating the rv (real video), this is the video codec within the rmvb container but container wise then yes it is old like avi and really hard to manage (compatibility with hardware and converting with back in the day).

If I was trolling, I would say the chinese can't encode to save their lives so learn to f-in encode .

But seriously it is kinda crappy, as with anything if your compressing alot then you are losing information (hello mp3) and depending on what content your encoding (animation or film); it can give raise to smudging, blockiness and color degradation (funny werid colors). The audio part, cooker I think is also compressed like hell. Real co. itself is also a load of shit, seriously who still uses that piece of shit video player? Actually if you installed it, it does install the codecs on your pc but not the splitter (used to split audio/video parts from container and transfers it to the relevant decoder). The way this is made so if your using anything else than realplayer to decode rmvb files your commiting a crime. Yes Real Alternative is illegal.

But in all fairness it is better than XviD but definately not h264 (low bitrate encoding wise when encoded using the same settings as the rv counterpart, thus similar sizes) and iit really depends on the encoder since from what I saw before, 1 pass encoding is usually used to save time but not sure nowdays since I hardly watch any now. This is the reason why I said the chinese can't encode =p so all in all it's passable providing it is encoded properly and average like mp3 is. But about the blockiness, etc which I mentioned above is true since someone did do a comparison with animated content a while back with h264 and rv10 which i can't find anymore. Also the china has low bandwith/speed or strict internet hence the low sized files plus it is really difficult to knock some sense into those encoders to change since they have been using real media for years so to speak.

I find it perfect for watching on my laptop. But very hard to find a good mediabox that also supports rmvb.
Popcorn Hour is a great box for example and I am considering to buy one, the only thing that holds me back is its lack of rmvb support.

i'm using RMVB HDD media player for that. Not much option since the release is in rmvb format. i prefer my files to be avi format with a higher bitrate.

think people use it cos they don't really have fast internet and it downloads using less time cos of its smaller file size?

rmvb is great..the file size is so small! allows you to download the movies/series quicker!

smaller file size, and quality from that smaller size is waaaaay better than comparable formats...which means faster download :)

i bought a rmvb dvd player online for $80, works great...just burn rmvb files on dvd (usually 1 dvd will fit the entire series)...works great!

yeah rmvb is faster to download due to smaller size files. wait less watch more....we are all chasing time and time waits for no one :)

  18. There is one down side of rmvb. At higher frames you notice the framelagg. or the bitrate is to low

The size is small and manageable....well, since everyone is using it and most dl especially the chinese ones are in rmvb since don't know when, just have to live with it.

Bit torrent was out like in the 2001.. and at that time not many ppl use Dsl/cable. I mean would you prefer to download 1 episode of 45min 145mb vs 1GB+ or 4gb hdtv .mkv. Since tvb series was like 20-40episode long.
