Hi guys, I need a bit of help when it comes to phones (phone dummy alert!!!). I'm still stuck in the past with a Samsung SGH-G600 and I think it's about time I upgrade to a smartphone with touchscreen and stuff so I can be cool as well. Going to NY end of this year and I believe phones are cheaper over there than here in Holland. My requirements: - Not more than $300. - Touchscreen. - Easy controls for Internet browsing. - A good quality camera/video capture. - Free of contracts and dial plans since I obviously do not live in the US. - Unlocked or easy to unlock. - The phone should work in Europe. There is so much choice out there, so I'm totally lost. Help ??? If you know of a good place to buy phones in NY as well, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
lol at 300 hundred bucks, you'd get a second hand phone at best and you need to make sure the technology works in holland.
Dan, you had to spoil it ... didn't you ? I guess I just proved that I am a phone dummy then Ok, uhhh ... $350 than ??? The reason why I do not want to make it too expensive is that I am planning to get me a tablet PC as well ... I guess I could always go with a cheap Android tablet PC instead of an iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab ... oh well. If I look at the prices here in Holland, for around $350 (€250) I get something like: - Samsung Wave TouchWiz S7230 - Samsung B7300 Omnia Lite - HTC Wildfire - HTC Touch2 - LG GD880 Mini - LG P500 Optimus One Whether any of these phones are good or cheaper in the US ... no idea ... just took some samples from a Dutch site.
I don't know but when I went shopping with my classmates earlier, most unlocked phones started around $400 .. at least around here in the West coast. I am not sure about NYC though .. I think they have a bigger "black" market than here .. lol
Thanks guys, I guess my believe that phones would be cheaper in the US was wrong :( If I look on the internet for example for the HTC Wildfire, then the prices are more or less the same over here. So I'll try to find something here in Holland after my vacation.
I'm there for a week, so they should be able to ship it to the hotel ... assuming it's next-day delivery. Don't know of any good sites in the US where to order cheap phones though.
Choices: J&R, Amazon, Newegg, Dell, etc... They do have 2nd day or next day shipping option, might cost a bit more though.
what the f.. are you talking about? The main 4 carrier in USA uses GSM and CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile = GSM. Verizon and Sprint = CDMA. You can also get unlocked phones from various websites for AT&T/T-Mobile or you can directly buy the phones from them but it's locked. Dell, J&R, Amazon, Newegg, and other websites sell phones as unlocked.
Chill guys ... I'll buy a phone here in Holland. The online prices in the US are really the same as the online prices here in Holland. According to a Dutch phone site the best price / quality smartphone is the HTC Wildfire. So I'm going for that, unless you guys have anything better to recommend in the $350 / €250 price range.
I wouldn't recommend HTC Wildfire. To low resolution. Due most of the android apps are made in HVGA and WVGA res. But if you not using any of that than it doesn't mather
I read about that. I also found a review where someone explains how to use AppBrain and Fast Web Installer to install apps that were not supported on the Wildfire due to resolution. Apparently the apps worked and looked just fine. But then again, I never had a smartphone before and I have no clue what kind of apps I am going to use on it. The other phones that are within my budget are: - HTC Legend - Sony Xperia X10 mini - Sony Xperia X10 mini pro - Sony Aino - Samsung Wave Touchwiz S7230 - LG GW620 - LG BL40 New Chocolate - Nokia X6 8GB And if I stretch it just a bit more: - Samsung B7722 - Sony Vivaz EDIT: Nevermind, decided a want an Android phone. So it's gonna be either HTC Wildfire or Legend. EDIT 2: Just did an impulse buy of the HTC Legend after reading a comparison review between the two. Also one place had it for the same price as the Wildfire which is about €120 / $166 cheaper than other places. So the choice was easy. >>> CASE CLOSED <<<
