Motorola Atrix or iPhone 4?

I need a new phone. Weigh in bitches.

My thoughts: The iphone4 is sexier, sleeker, and has a better UI.

The Atrix has a dual core tegra processor, much higher tech, better talktime, bigger screen; BUT its crippled by Motoblur, and it just looks like a regular smartphone, while the iphone 4 has a much more unique look to it.

It feels like buying an iPhone4 at this juncture would be like buying a used 2010 car... but its a really good car.

I wish I could wait until the Galaxy S II or the LG Optimus 3D... but I need a new phone for work and I can't afford to wait until Q3 or Q4 of 2011.

    Your thoughts?

  2. I'm normally an advocate against the Iphone, simply because of it being over hyped, shitty hardware, and software restrictions, but specifically between the Atrix and the Iphone, i'd take the Iphone.. And that's due to several reasons.

One of which you've already mentioned about a more refined (not necessarily better) UI, and two, for the time being, much much more compatibility and availability with other products; i.e. more accessory options and more abundance of applications.

Don't get me wrong, I love Android and everything that comes with it, but I'll tell you straight up some of the (albeit minor) issues I'm having with my Nexus One, so you can make your decision.

    1) Unless the Atrix becomes as popular as the Iphone (which I doubt), there's obviously going to be a lesser assortment of accessories for it, ranging from car/desk docks, w/e. Tried looking for some for the N1, but it's very limited.

    2) I love Android, but sometimes, you just want something that's straight forward to use. Android is getting better, but its UI design still has a lot to work on, in terms of user experience. Most of the time I don't care about some annoyance in the UI design, but sometimes when you're pissed/down/tired/w.e you just want to use it simply and shit.

    3) Another bugger is the fact that since Android is designed for a much wider collection of hardware, it's not as refined for each hardware. The iOS is refined AND optimized for a few iDevices. You know the rest.

    4) It's Motorola....

Now what do I personally have against the Iphone?

    1) 8/10 people have it. Out of the remaining two, one is a person who still owns a bar phone, the other is an Android phone... obviously an exaggeration but yea lol

    2) Lesser hardware (again you've already said this)

    3) Android will become much much more mainstream in the near future, simply because the ease of programming third party professional/business applications, unlike on iOS (objective-c and going through approval in the app store)

    4) Android has more potential and much more powerful than iOS. It just hasn't been fully exploited yet.

In the short term, I'd take an Iphone. In the long run, an Android.

    Good luck with your decision

    Well reasoned, brotato.

You're right about the 8/10 thing.

Yesterday I went to my friend's birthday party and I think 7/10 people had an iphone 4.

I really don't care about having an iphone to be with the 'in' crowd. I'd rather be out of it, but not at the expense of purchasing an inferior product. There will be iphone killers in the next couple months... but I'm not sure the Atrix is it.

That said. There is a lot of potential for Android. I can see future UI updates bringing the Atrix to a level more on par with the iphone 4. The Atrix's real downfall isn't its hardware, its the software, and if I'm patient, that should be addressed eventually.

I was just looking at this phone because I was looking at the commercial. I haven't done enough research, but if you decide to get the iPhone 4, I would hold off until the iPhone 5 which is likely May to July; although there's no guarantee for that.

Here's my opinions on the iPhone:
I personally love the iPhone. The operating system is the first of it's kind and one of the first touch screen phones. I've played with Android Phones and Windows phones from all manufacturers: Samsung, HTC, Motorola and etc. They are very very well specced out phones, but the responsiveness of the screen just doesn't seem to be as crisp or clean as the iPhone. I think the UI is subjective depending on who is using the phone. I personally like the OS UI because it's one of those that I don't really have to worry about; it just works right out of the box. And personally from what I've seen (selling close to 10 iPhones a day) the UI is very user friendly for the general audience. As we al know, Android suffers from fragmentation but Apple will drop support for old phones as well (as they did with the original iPhone & 3G.) And as Dan mentioned, iOS is locked out and apps are subjective to an approval process, sometimes that can be good for someone who prefers steamlined content, but it could be bad for someone else may prefer open source. There are options though.. such as jailbreaking your iPhone. It just depends how far you want to go with it. Something about the iPhone is that there support for the phone at Brick & Mortar locations (Apple Stores) where they can fix or replace your phone right away.

I think at the end of the day it depends if whether you want a phone that works day to day, is consistent and is a good phone over all. Versus a phone that is a bit more open source, specced out, and equipped with all the bells and whistle which may demand a bit more attention every now and then.

I might consider waiting for the iPhone 5 if I lived in the US.

Unfortunately, in Canada we usually have to wait another 3-6 months to get the latest iPhone, and I'm not sure if I can hold out that long.

You're right though, the iphone 5 is gonna be sick. Too bad Apple is so tight with information.

There are a few somewhat reliable rumors about specs:

4" Screen with more flexible/shatter resistant glass
    New Antenna
    Likely 1 GB of ram
Dual Core A5 processor (from the ipad2)

And it will probably have LTE for high speed 4G

The formfactor will probably almost be exactly the same though, aside from a larger screen.

I'm not sure what you actually do for work so my suggestion may not be appropriate. I'd suggest a BB, if its truly for work. Yes, its ugly, the OS isn't that great and the lack of apps is disappointing. However, it it truly is for work, no phone performs these tasks better. Push email, BBM, security, excellent battery life and talk time along with a very good QWERTY keypad. I'm suggesting this with the assumption that this phone will be for work ONLY. The BB Bold 9780 would be my choice as a work phone.

Get the Atrix if you want to take control and do different stuff with your device.

Atrix root going public is not too far away. Plenty of customization and it's not even hard to do so.

A lot of people have the iPhone because it was the first line of touch screen smartphone to come out. It was a great innovation and pioneering in the last few years.

Get the iPhone if you just want something sleek (even though a lot of people have it) and jailbreak for apps/games. But the tegra powered phones will have access to Nvidia Tegra zone, and there will be some Android phones getting access to Sony Playstation Network games I think. Sony Xperia is going to lead this flagship. You'll see more stuff coming down.

The iPhone is mostly for the mainstream consumer that doesn't really do too much with their phones and just want something in the luxury. The android phones, and there are tons of them coming out, are more for tech savvy people. Even if they're not tech savvy, the category of people that would pick up iPhones but end up gettting the Android phones most likely get it for the bigger screen and other extra bits of technological upgrade over iPhones.

I have the Galaxy S at the moment. Waiting on Galaxy S II or some other nice device to pop up on one of the other carriers. I'm leaning on a future Motorola Droid or HTC something. I definitely want a 4.3-4.5" screen phone and some extra battery juice to go with it.

    tl;dr, iPhone 4 / iPhone 5 / iPhone Nano = ass. Get a real smartphone. :)

the phone would be like 50% work 50% play.

Just to mix this up a little more, I'm also considering the Sony Xperia Arc

much weaker specs than the Atrix, but it has an incredibly sexy formfactor and way better UI.

I think rogers will be releasing this in late april, or early May, which is doable.

Bigger screen for iphone? i remember SJ saying how no one would buy 4 inch "hummer" phones.. i highly doubt Apple would make a 4 inch iPhone.

They're supposedly coming out with a smaller sized iPhone to compete in the low to mid priceline market so I think there's going to be a little bit more flavor.

I think we'll see iPhone 5 go up to about 4" those retina displays are sexy as hell, squeezing all those pixels per inch into such a device. I am curious as to what they're coming out with next. If it's bullet proof, I might consider getting one but I don't really like iOS as much as FroYo and Gingberbread.

After a bit of research, I think I'll probably just go with the Xperia Arc. Its running a somewhat outdated processor, and no where near as tech heavy as the motorola, but sony's version of Android is lightyears better than Blur and it has a way better camera, which is definitely a good selling point for me.

I don't really need a tegra processor, I'm not going to be doing lots of gaming on my phone, and as long as I can make calls, read webpages and type up the occasional email on it, I'm happy.

Also, the fact its on Rogers means I won't need to switch my provider.

  15. I was worried that the Arc might be running an outdated version of Android, like 2.1 or something, but after researching, it looks like 2.4 is leaked on it. Might be good stuff

  16. Nice choice fear, i feel like i have played with the arc recently but it could have just been another xperia..

I'm fairly certain it will be running 2.3 Gingerbread on release.

I think only the Nexus S will be running 2.4 when it comes out in a couple months.

Unrelated, but apparently iOS 5 is going to be delayed until Fall. I think it will probably blow Android 2.x out of the water, but hopefully android's dev's will be working hard on getting Android 3.x into cellphones by that time. :whip:
