I really need to plan something and do my own thing instead of being pissed off everyday that im on a trip i don't want to go on. I need some insights on the following cities: Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Banff, vancouver, richmond, and victoria). Please post if you live in the city or been there. I want to know good eats and good free must visit places. Malls, parks and anything tourists should go check out. Preferably places downtown near my hotels. Delta Winnipeg, Delta Regina, International Hotel Suites Calgary, Radisson President Hotel & Suites, Vancouver Airport, Executive Airport Plaza Richmond. I will probably leave the group and go look at places alone as i need air to breathe and can't stand 13 days with family 24/7. I guess my family is going to rent a car. I would like to know the best way to get to victoria, driving or taking transit. I will be in GVR area for 5 days so that is the place i want to know the most about......Recommend me places.

I just happened to be revived... well just kidding. Is there something you want to know about Vancouver? A little more specific categories, preferences would help.

Well like main attractions toursist usually visit? beach? parks? harbour? and like what is downtown area and how to get there from richmond. Also i had a disagreement with mom's friend because she said it is cheaper to rent a car in richmond then drive on the boat and the drive around victoria BC. But i think it is cheaper and better to take transit because car on the boat ($50+$15 for each passenger one way) but she said its $50 for the car with the passenger included in the price. I checked the ferry prices and it said $50 not including driver and passenger. Basically what I saw was its better to park at the terminal and then boat then get a day pass in victoria.
Also what are the main places to go to in Richmond and eats? i know Richmond is like Markham, full of asians. We're gonna rent a car for 2-3 days. I need to see my friend's list who's free so i can chill with them. Cause i really don't want to be with my fam cept for victoria or seattle cause i have no choice unless i get someone to go victoria with.

    Beach:
    - Kitsilano Beach (young ppl)
    - English Bay (downtown, longer sea wall)
(I don't really recommend Jericho beach, because there's not much to do in that area --> residential)

    Parks:
    - Stanley Park: has a water fountain in the middle of it.
    - Queen Elizabeth: Near by there's a giant swimming pool. It was the curling rink from the Olympics and turned into swimming pool with crazy slides and rides and stuff in it.

    Harbor:
    - Olympic Torch
    - Vancouver Convention Centre --> it hosts exhibits.. so it's not free. But the architecture is interesting. Would be nice to pass by for a random drive in downtown.

    Malls:
    - Pacific Centre
    - Robson St (between Howe St and Jervis St)

    General Neighbourhood guideline:
    - "West End" + Davie St: gay's area, coincidentally also a food area.
    - Yaletown: Yuppies, social house scene.
    - East Hastings: STAY AWAY, it's the creepiest area in the whole metropolitan area.

Downtown is definitely more action than the rest of the city, and much more active later at night too. The downtown area is very multicultural.

Getting downtown from Airport: take transit. Board skytrain from Airport Station (buy fare in advance, it's cheaper than paying fare at the station, richmond = zone 2). Trains from airport go downtown. Get off train at "Vancouver City Centre Station", there you are linked to Pacific Centre via under pathway.

You're correct on this. It's car's price + however many passengers. But you should work out the math, because parking at the terminal is $19 (according to bcferries.com website). I'm not too familiar with Victoria, so can't help you on that one.

Right now there's a night market going on in Richmond too. It's at 12631 Vulcan Way (From airport, go east to past Number 5 Rd, when you see IKEA (south east corner) it's north from there). It's quite busy there, but it's open only weekends (fri/sat/sun, 7pm to 1am, google richmond night marker/summer night market for more info). You can park along Vulcan Way if you're lucky and find a spot (watch out for fire hydrants), although there are some warehouse-like places that will sell you their parking space for $5 or so. Interesting mix of food (dimsum, bbq corn, bbt, spicy squid, korean, viet, takoyaki... etc), some performance shows and random material goods you'd find at a night market (right now there's a really large mobile phone accessories section).

As for places to eat... well there's A LOT. Aberdeen Centre (newer and clean feel) and Parker Place are THE asian places at the moment. Richmond Centre is a westernized mall but still a nice place to shop (similar to Pacific Centre in downtown). Right now Aberdeen Centre's ABC HK Cafe is quite a local hit, though not exactly targeting the tourist market.

There's also Burnaby's Metrotown (biggest mall in the region) and if you want you could ride the Seabus (operated by translink, 2 zone fare or included in your day pass) just for kicks. It's a Ferry that crosses from downtown to the north shore (West Vancouver/North Vancouver area). Then there's also Playland Amusement Park (further east on Hastings, not close to downtown), but the Pacific National Exhibition is not on yet so it's just rides and amusement park games.

LOL. No don't go to coquitlam. Burnaby's main fun area is metrotown, other than that it's not much action. Mostly residential/quiet.

Hmm.. I'm sorta split on where the young asians would be, but if you want chinese/cantonese then go Richmond No3 Rd. Pretty much anywhere there between Aberdeen to Richmond Centre (but NOT Landsowne Centre. It's for old foggies) is a good place to start.

I know for sure that there's a big Japanese community in the between west end and general downtown area. Maybe i should circle the area on a google maps SS so it's easier to show cuz its sorta fuzzy and hard to say. there's also an H-mart on robson and seymour, it's like a western style grocery store, but they sell like 95% korean goods (imported) there. I see so many students bus back to campus with H-mart shopping bags it's almost hilarious.

To be honest, most of the university Asian "Hot Chicks" are back in asia, since school is out.

also DON'T DRIVE to downtown. It's totally not worth it. You could just walk, at the most it'd be like 20min brisk walk from end to end.

    Good choice on Guu~~

I forgot to add. Pacific Centre is an underground mall. It's why you won't find it on as a default landmark on google maps. The main way to get in would be from the department stores.. or one of their few above ground entrances.

please circle places you would go on a map =) i wanna chill with the korean people lol. I will tell my parents not to drive to downtown cause they keep thinking its cheaper since we have 5 people and driving would be better but factor in gas and parking and rental, it's really not. Whatever, they tell me not to spend money on useless things yet they blow it on this trip so im just gonna go crazy on shopping in seattle. Is there anything particular i should buy as souvenirs?

I'm not too familiar with the korean places, mainly because I haven't had much experience with korean restaurants yet.

Here's some general guidelines, that you may or may not already know:
the japanese part is there only b/c of the japanese population. not exactly concentration of japanese shops.

Korean culture is just starting to grow (in downtown), especially since the H-mart opened up on Robson and Seymour. This might be relevant: http://www.straight.com/article-258866/start-kimchi-and-kpop

Also most of the bars and pubs in dt are marketed towards caucasians. Just a side note.

sketchy zone. like drug addicts, high crime rates, low class chickens, etc. though it just spans 2 blocks approx. (cut off in the map)
