Actually, that's not necessarily how kidney physiology works. Renal function isn't only defined by the analogy of having two engines and if one fails, then one may fly with a single engine, so to speak. Rather, it's like having two biologic filters; both of which can function at marginal capacity but working together, can still effectively manage to perform adequate renal physiologic function. If one is removed however, then even if the other does remain, the person would likely need to go on dialysis as the remaining kidney is not healthy enough to go it alone. Hence kidney donation is not something for the very weak or unhealthy. Many people who donate one of their kidneys don't realize that in giving up their "extra" kidney, they eliminate half of their renal capacity, and the one kidney has to work a lot harder with a lot less functional reserve. That may not be so obvious when they are young, but when they get older, the loss of that other kidney earlier in their life may be a decision that they would come to regret. That's why I personally would only donate if I weren't in a position to complain, ie. when I'm pushing up daisies.

Anyone willing to sell their own kidney would likely have sold anything else too. But, in this case, the buyer wanted a kidney. If said buyer would have asked for the boy's mother, the boy would likely just as easily have sold her too, his frame of mind being such that it was (ie blinded by his lust for the device).
silly, at the moment he will be fine but i think he will later regret it. plus, there was a lot of risk, i guess immaturity is another cause of the rash decision.
