CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (CBS) -- A judge in Corpus Christi, Texas had some harsh words for a mother charged with spanking her own child before sentencing her to probation. "You don't spank children today," said Judge Jose Longoria. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children." Rosalina Gonzales had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of injury to a child for what prosecutors had described as a "pretty simple, straightforward spanking case." They noted she didn't use a belt or leave any bruises, just some red marks. As part of the plea deal, Gonzales will serve five years probation, during which time she'll have to take parenting classes, follow CPS guidelines, and make a $50 payment to the Children's Advocacy Center. She was arrested back in December after the child's paternal grandmother noticed red marks on the child's rear end. The grandmother took the girl, who was two years-old at the time, to the hospital to be checked out. Gonzales who doesn't have custody of the child or her other two children, is trying to get them back, but until CPS feels she is ready the kids are living with their paternal grandmother.
Maybe I'm just younger, but I think if you have to resort to spanking it merely shows how poor your parenting is.
there are many methods but the judge's sentence was kinda too much, it works for some and not for others. But in today's western society for the most part and even in some eastern society, hitting your child is not acceptable.
i know people who didnt spank their children at all, one of them has a demon child, yeah she can do 'time out' and send him to his room but he will just tell her to F#ck off. i think spanking is perfectly fine, but some people like to lump it together with battery. wish my parents were like you, i would have had an easy time in my delinquent days, not like you would be able to punish me, i just wouldn't accept it, you send me to my room? ill tell you to 'do one' and go hang out with my friends, whatcha gona do about it? you cant touch me and you aint gona spank me spank cus that would be poor parenting. But Im sure eventually all forms of punishment will be considered an abuse of human rights, where does it end, children are becoming equal to parents. All i knows is the governemt and society aint gona tell me how to raise my kids, when we aint got record numbers of crazy kids on the streets either stabbing each other, getting drunk, getting pregnant then maybe ill listen to the gov and society.
what the world is turning into when u can't even give ur kid a few whack on the butt as punishment? Some "ahem" grown-up man will even pay to go into some shady clubs to get the same treatment.
untrue, kids will take your leniency for granted.... poor parenting? no, embedding the idea that they will be punished for wrong doings... sounds about right. Negative reinforcement.... has worked in the past..... will always work. Got to establish your authority and make sure they respect you as such.
And I'm sure some famous serial murderers were spanked too, your point? Or you can explain why whatever wrongdoing is wrong. But, just spanking them does seem easier. I mean, why teach them things when you can just beat them and call it a day.
^ you really think the entire time the spanking is happening the parent isn't saying something? Instant reprimanding. just words will fall on deaf ears after awhile.... they equate wrong doing as something they can get off easily. It's like kids and money... they have no idea how much it is until they start working and paying for their own stuff.

I'd just like to say there isn't one right way to be a parent. I know people who have not been beaten and have become pretty good individuals. Although I did get beat as a child, I still question if I would do the same to my future children. I do believe the negative reinforcement helped to discipline me and of course I didn't grow up to hate my parents either, they mean the world to me. We all have our own views on how to properly raise a child, but like many situations in life, there is not always a single go to solution.
Kids are supposed to respect the parent's authority and this is most commonly backed up by authoritative fear of the parent by being superior. Its like Alpha Males in animal packs, someone tries to challenge the leader of the group, they get shut down because they didnt know their place
Much how they isn't one way of parenting, there isn't one type of child. Each child could require different level of discipline.
