+1 I'm sure the metal would also be subject to damage from this, but if there were like films of oil or something on it, it might serve as a sort of barrier. Although, by the time it goes into the sea it would be so diluted it'd be ok. Sorta. Its JUST as bad as HCl. Sulfuric acid is H2SO4, also a strong an acid. There were fumes because of the exothermic reaction of the acid eating away at the sponge to become neutralised, instantly vaporising the water from the sponge. Though, the fumes could also be the sponge. Either way the guy who did this could have easily ruined his house's pipes. Just hope he doesn't repeat it too many times.
