Chinese woman catches toddler who fell out of 10th floor window A Chinese woman has saved the life of a two-year-old girl by catching the child after she fell out of a 10th floor window, state-run media reported on Sunday. The incident happened on Saturday when Wu Juping, 31, saw 2-year-old Niu Niu dangling out of the window of her home near Hangzhou, the capital of eastern China’s Zhejiang Province. The child was home alone when it happened. Soon after Wu saw Niu, she quickly took off her high-heeled shoes and ran underneath the child, stretching her arms in the sky as the child plummeted towards the ground, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Wu was not able to completely catch Niu, but the child landed on her arm before hitting the ground, breaking her fall. “When she reached out to the child, she put her own life at risk,” said Jin Dengfeng, the head of a local hospital. Wu, who herself has a seven-month-old boy, suffered a broken arm and will soon require surgery. “She could have died or been paralyzed for the rest of her life if the child had hit her head or back,” Jin said, added that Wu will need at least six months to recover from her injuries. The child meanwhile was found to be bleeding internally and remains in a critical condition, although it is unlikely that the child would have survived at all if Wu had not tried to catch her. “I don’t regret anything that happened. I just hope that Niu Niu will recover,” Wu told Xinhua. The report did not say whether the mother of Niu would possibly face charges for leaving her child home alone.
It is such a regular foreseeable occurrence in the United States that window guards laws (which mandate safety bars in apartment or high rise dwellings) are a part of city life. But, what I think Maverick was instead referring to, was the heroic act of disregarding one's own safety and attempting to catch a 30 pound (average wt for 2 year old) toddler traveling at near terminal velocity. She was lucky that she only sustained broken arms as injuries; the weight of toddler traveling at that speed could have literally taken her arms off by the sheer force of impact. I'm sure that those of you who are good in physics would implicitly know that catching the child was a humanly physical impossibility. Or, it could be likened to someone trying to catch a piano falling from the second floor, ie. no way that it can be done. Maybe Chinese plans for a new Olympic event? At any rate, a brief video that shows the location where it happened (no other info). Youtube seems to be full of these baby catching stories too, LOL... But that alone bespeaks of the sad reality that child safety around the world is seriously wanting:
Toddlers fall out of the windows all over the world, but catching them in midair is not done everywhere. Please note this is not the first case where someone saves a falling toddler by catching.
I saw this on the news, the lady broke her arm saving this kid... If I remember correctly, it's was from the 10th floor.
More on the story: But, it does happen elsewhere too... And finally this, a reminder that not all of these stories have happy endings:
Random acts of selflessness to save another human being isn't an alien concept. In todays day where news and information can be shared at the blink of an eye, more and more of these stories are make their way to the masses. Claiming that a)toddlers falling out of tall buildings or b) random acts of heroism only happens in China is just Mavericks way of posting another useless thread with his idiotic naming scheme. You're a fucking dumbass.
Well, at any rate, I was just giving my opinion on what I thought Maverick meant by the whole thing, not that I necessarily agree with his point of view. I tend to look upon these things as part and parcel of the human condition, of man rising to the occasion to assist his fellow man for no other gain than to reaffirm (to themselves mostly), their own sense of humanity. In essence, it is just impossible for some to stand idly by and watch another come to harm if one can do something to help; there is nothing intrinsically "Chinese" about this. Rather, it is a trait that defines us as human beings.
handoff1 Forgive me, but I just love the indication of your indignation (!!!!); really adds a lot of emphasis and drama, LOL... Wanna help save a life? IMHO, bad parenting isn't the issue; channeling one's indignation into Window Guard legislation would have a more positive and lasting impact.
