So I'm trying to plan a one person trip to HK in either mid September/early October.

I think I have a lot of the logistics worked out... I'm pretty sure I can wrangle hotel + flight for under $2400 for 10 nights, which seems reasonable enough to me.

The only thing I need to know is where I should stay in terms of area.

It either comes down to the Wan Chai area, which seems close to a lot of main attractions, or else in Kowloon by Tsim Sha Tsui, where there seems to be a lot of shopping and might be more active?

I need a recommendation of where it would be best to stay.

If I am in the Wan Chai area, I'll probably be staying here: http://www.cosmopolitanhotel.com.hk/

If I'm in Kowloon I'm not totally sure what hotel is best yet. Just need some advice on what side of the harbour is best to get my money's worth.

If I want to be around Mong Kok, this is probably the hotel i'd be looking at:

Sept/Oct is pretty good, low season (after summer holiday and before christmas), weather is generally nice.

see if you can get airfares+hotel deals, sometimes airlines do this to attract customers during low season.

Lot of hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui and its pretty easy to get around to everywhere you want to go from there.

    never been, can't really help...
but either way, 2.4k for 10 nites would be a bargain!!!

hk island isn't really that big itself, but drools... congrats with the trip!! wish i could... hehehe
but then i'm planning france and belgium for 2 days (might be a bit of a waste, but better than nothing)

    Thanks!

hahahaha that site isn't organized that well though >< I really like Agoda, really solid layout. Although some of the rates on there are misleading. I saw a pop up for the Kowloon Shangri-la hotel for $99 a night, but when i clicked on it it was actually $341. I emailed their support to find out what day that rate was referencing... if I could get a room at the shangri-la for 100 bucks I'd be all over that shit.

sometimes getting the crappest room at a decent hotel isn't the best thing to do...
better off getting a slighlty better room at a less known hotel
    =)

    boutique hotels are great!

Like most places, further from central, lower the rates

Perhaps full serviced apartments instead of hotels. They are sometimes cheaper.

welp, hotel is booked. I recently got a fairly significant raise at work and am now making serious bank so I decided I wouldn't skimp and am going 5 star.

    I'll be staying here: http://www.hotel-icon.com/

    -lol

Also, I don't have any relatives in HK... a couple friends will be in HK at the same time as me, but they will be staying with their families, and I might meet up with them at some point.

Still not sure if one of my friends will be joining me... but the hotel is non-refundable so I am going regardless. I'll be in HK from Aug 24 and leaving Sept. 2nd.

Things I plan to do in HK:

Mong Kok night market, Victoria Peak, Causeway Bay, HK Times Square, Jumbo Restaurant, Ride the Star Ferry, Avenue of Stars, check out some ex-pat bars, walk all around the tsim sha tsui area, stanley park and 1 day in Macao.

I essentially only have 8 full days in HK... which really isn't a lot so I'm going to have to try to blitz all the sightseeing. Wake up at 9 and stay out till like midnight and crash hard kinda deal.

I also kinda realize all the stuff I plan to do is the really touristy stuff... anyone who has been to HK or lives there have any advice for more obscure places to visit or things I should see that aren't on most maps?

An easy way to get around Macau is using the free shuttle buses provided by all the casinos.

you might wanna watch out though if you look at cheap places cause they tend to have "them" kinda things ..... ive only stayed about a month now and the amount of stuff i heard about "them" are endless ... proper got me shit scared .... and tbh you can sleep any where in kowloon / hong kong cause the mtr, train, bus, minibus are so so efficient just get your self an octopus card (and top it up) and u can use it any where literally and it will save you so much from buying a ticket everytime or having loose change in your pocket

i would say if you had family that lived in old islands go there cause i do and my gawd ... soo beautiful at night and peaceful cause there are hardly any one that lives there

.... I have no idea what you're referring to man... I'm gonna assume you either mean Triads or cheap hookers. I intend to avoid both lol.

I'll definitely be getting an octopus card so I don't need to carry small bills/change.

Also, that Sai Kung region sounds really nice BB... but it seems kinda complicated to get out there. I think Im going to try to stick to Kowloon, Mong Kok and the HK Island. >< I'd go to Sai Kung if I had a car and/or family to go with.
