Supermodel Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau’s appearance in an edition of Vogue Paris has prompted fury from parents... because she’s only 10-years-old. The mini-model was featured in the January 2011 issue – as part of a 15-page picture spread called ‘Cadeaux’ (gifts). It included shots of a heavily made-up Thylane posing seductively in a chair, bed and on an animal skin rug, with her legs and neckline bared. The controversial pics were shown on US TV this month and reignited concern over the sexualisation of children in the media. The debate comes as the Government announced a crackdown on inappropriate clothing and raunchy ads aimed at young kids earlier this year. They commissioned the Bailey Review to investigate enforcing restrictions on the sexualisation of children in the media and sexual content in advertising. Reg Bailey, Chief Executive of the Mother’s Union is in charge of the independent review. Fleur Dorrell, Head of Safe Policy at the Mother’s Union, told Yahoo! UK that these images were “blurring all thoughts of beauty” and were “physically disturbing” for adults. She added: “Modelling agencies think that it is ok to use pre-pubescent girls as models but this is completely selling us a different idea of beauty. They are making this girl look and feel as though she has to dress this way in order to be perfect.” “If you think about it in reverse they wouldn’t ask me, a 43-year-old woman to dress like a girl, so why would they want to dress her up like that?” Despite concern over the images of Thylane, there is huge fan support for model, with a blog and several Facebook fan pages dedicated to her work. On one fan page a woman wrote: “I don't find this unusual, she is super talented...plus it’s French Vogue!!! FRENCH. VOGUE. Totally ok.” Another fan added: “I am frustrated with all the people who deem this as sensual... Art is totally subjective and depends on the individual viewing it.” The Mother’s Union and David Cameron have invited the fashion and advertising industries to reassess the representation of young people under the age of 16 at a summit in October.
Why am I not surprised this protest is coming from MOTHERS? To me, it feels like they're jealous or had some self-esteem issues earlier in their live.
It will become more acceptable over time though, as long as they keep showing it to us we will become desensitized to it by the next generation, only the old fashioned horrible 'bigots' [sic] will dare condemn it.
Lol, maybe but you have to think of it from their perspective. They are overall mothers so they have the right to feel 'jealous' or shall I say protective over their daughter or something. From the eyes of others (ie: the "french vogue") it may be normal but in others it may not.
Are u saying that u wouldnt mind ur 10 year old daughter wearing 10 layers of make up n 10cm heels at that age??? It sets a bad example... kids copy this kinda stuff.... 10 year old kids should play with barbies or whatever not tryna be all grown up n stuff... thats just wrong... the more they look grown up the more they think they are n wanna act that way without even knowing what they're getting themselves into. I wouldnt want my 10yr old to be in the modeling industry... ....
i wonder how their marketing director came up with such a "brilliant" idea to convey youth and beauty into one thing.
Big time, she just took a big young, from kidulthood to adulthood. Hahah when she grows up she'll be buying all designers!
personally its situations like this that shows how society is today .... people can bitch and gripe about how wrong this is ... but it will eventually be accepted as "normal" .. i dont know about you but models today are getting younger and younger and the idea of being 26 as a model is old ... sooo fuck knows .. this just shows an extreme vers imo
lol the mothers are just pissed off their kids are gonna want designer clothes and they're not going to nearly as much money for them at the age of 10. But really tho.. the first and second pic looks good, I dunno about the third pic.. might be showing too much skin. You can't hate.. at age 10.. that lil girls got SWAG! Only other person I can compare her to is willow smith, but then willow smith doesn't wear stuff that revealing. lol it's weird, Vogue is like geared towards women right? so lil girls may not even buy the magazine..
Don't make such ridiculous assumptions. Ten layers of makeup? Now you're just being silly. What's a bad example is subjective. The idea of what kids should play with as a kid changes. Paradigms will shift. I've seen little girls that are tinkering with computers rather than play with barbies. Hell, I've seen a lot of girls at school going for degrees in engineering, what once used to be a male orientated area. My point is, every generation brings about changes of what is acceptable. I think its incredibly archaic of you to limit girls to what the older generations think they should be doing. If that were the case, perhaps little girls should also be expected to become stay at home mothers. Not trying to bring up a whole argument about gender equality, but this crossed my mind and I feel like I should just point this out. A lot of women talk about empowering themselves, and making decisions for themselves. Isn't this what this girl is doing? It seems a bit funny that you're totally going against this idea of empowering women by imposing what you think she out to do, especially since you are a woman.
She's 10 years old!? Empowering yourself at the age of 10 with make up and clothes adults put on her? Look at the third picture... n see for yourself... her eyeshadow...? RIGHT?! The girl thinks is all fun n shit... n im sure it is but im just saying it sets a bad example... for a 10 year old, how is all that empowering cuz I totally fail to see how it empowers a child! WTF will little girls (other than this girl who gets paid for this) gain by wearing make up at that age? Will they be a better person by putting on make up at that age? Really now!? N when i was referring to the barbie thing i just mentioned some random things little girls do... dotn care if its a nds or pc or whatever... dont have to take every thing so literally! I merely said that i find it wrong that ten year olds like her are parading around like that. Not sure if you have heard of child pagaents... its not much different from this... it makes me sick to my stomach how parents push/stimulate their girls to do this...! This is not to be compared by assuming that girls should stay home... I have never even mentioned that!? Ur acting as if i just said that girls dont have the right to go the school... THAT IS WHAT EMPOWERS a child, education/knowledge... maybe kick ass at sports but I dont see how u can put a link to a 10 year old wearing make up n acting all grown up with generations that change.... really... I fully understand the fact that children these days are different when it comes to playing with computers etc insteada barbiedolls and thats not a bad thing at all of course and as i recall i havent said a thing about that so i dont see how u come that comparison! Weird assumptions and accusations... thats all i hear from u!! Here is what you think is normal right cuz its: VERY EMPOWERING!! Please tell me, would u like it if ur lil girl would walk ard like this cuz its "normal"? Is this empowering yourself? Cuz everyone does it these days and we have to accept the changes and be modern ppl? Ur such a modern man since u support this... YEAH RIGHT!
