Ray's pretending he doesn't know how to be "human" because it's part of his plan. He is plotting to help Bobby build a relationship and get him at the peak of his life in terms of achievements before he rips it all apart like Bobby "supposedly" did to Ray's family. It's pretty obvious... this plot really isn't confusing at all.
