After 20 years in showbiz, actress Athena Chu finally gains international recognition.

The actress was nominated for the Best Actress award at the International Emmy Awards, for her role in A World without Walls. This marked the first time a Hong Kong actress was nominated at the prestigious award show.

Athena expressed that she never thought she would be nominated for the International Emmy Awards this year, because the TV movie won the silver prize at the 46th Chicago International Film Festival last year.

Commenting on her feelings of being nominated, the actress said excitedly, "I was sleeping when my manager called to congratulate me on my nomination. I thought I was dreaming. I only realised it wasn't a dream when my manager told me to check online."

Athena added that being nominated for the category was already as good as winning the title.

Upon hearing the news, the actress called her boyfriend Paul Wong immediately.

"He had been through a lot with me. He had been by my side, since I was nominated for a Golden Horse Award in 1999," she let on.

Athena was also moved to tears and began to sob, when she knew that Paul was upset because she was still labelled as a 'sexy actress' despite her years of hard work. Nonetheless, he expressed his excitement at her nomination and said that Athena is very important to him.

The actress later expressed that she will be going home to celebrate the nomination with Paul.

In A World without Walls, Athena played a paralysed and physically disabled person.

Her co-star Michael Tong, who had worked on various dramas with the actress previously, complimented Athena for breathing life into the character and believed that the nomination would be a major career breakthrough for the actress.

In other related news, MediaCorp Ch5's satirical programme The Noose was also nominated for the Best Comedy award.

I haven't seen any of her works in recent years so I have no clue about her acting talent and/or improvement.

I don't know how good she is either. but these awards usually goes to the "artistic" movie; like what Gong Li's so many movies. I never understood what's so good about those movies as my definition of those movies is zzzzzZZZZZZ ...

Congratulations to her. I can see why she had the label of "sexy actress" as most of her past roles weren't very meaty and she would be in a flowervase role.

lol .. I don't know too but one award nomination suddenly made her acting good .. does it make sense? Are we that short of Chinese actress .. like the gal Zhang Zi Zi or something in the Crouching Tiger movie .. one hit wonder and bam .. she's everywhere.
