    According to the Oriental Daily,

Hongkogner’s resentment towards Mainlander continues to escalate. A small conflict can become violent verbal war any time. The day before yesterday, a video titled with “Verbal War on Train Hongkonger vs Mainlander” was shared on YouTube. In the video, “Mr Hong Kong” was unhappy that a Mainland mother and her children were eating dried noodle in the train compartment and the dregs of it were all over the floor. Therefore, he came up and stopped them from eating. The Mainland woman and her friend rebuked. Hongkonger passers-by also joined in and it became a Hong-Kong-China verbal war.

Reactions of Hong Kong netizen from the above report

Most netizen criticised that Mainlander don’t have civic-conscious and praised “Mr Hong Kong” . Netizen BlingCar33 said, “Since we always keep silent, locusts now bully and trample on us.”

Both the narrated news clips from Hong Kong Apple Daily and the raw videos was spread to Mainland China through Weibo, Chinese Twitter, and this incident stirred anti Hong Kong sentiment in China.

 They should do something like this in the UK. It's annoying when people eat Chicken+Chips or other food which emits strong food odour. Fine them with a ticket!

Unless HK is careful, pretty soon, they'll be shitting on the floor too, LOL...

But, like I always said, in 1997, we did the shit backwards; instead of giving HK "back" to China, they should have given China to HK.

Ok first of all, the people not following the basic rules is wrong. But for everyone to stereotype Mainlanders and saying they're all like that isn't right. I agree, a lot of them are like this but we still shouldn't stereotype. That's like saying all black people are bad and all chinese people eat dogs and know kungfu, etc.

Furthermore, are you all telling me you've never broken any rules in public places before? -_- Why is the fact that they're eating on the train so much of a bigger deal than it should be? Because they're Mainlanders? Again, they're wrong but this is blown way out of proportion simply because both sides are too prideful.

The guy on tv is full of shit too. Both sides are wrong!

    Tu quoque.

I think that the HKers were overreacting a bit, but given the context i suppose it wasn't too suprising.
In anycase, HK really needs to figure out a way to solve these mainland-HK problems.

Seriously; people eat in the MTR all the time, and they're not all from the mainland either (ie regular HK'ers do it just as well).

    Stereotypes.

Humans break minor rules here and there, but it depends if that race is hated on in that area to get a scolding or not.

but the girl was admitting the wrong whereas the mom was like "shush, we didn't eat anything"...what is wrong is not admitting something when you're obviously in the wrong and still denying it.

but that's not even the point. lol she didn't deny that she was eating. It appears she told the guy to mind his own business, and the guy was going apeshit on her, so she acted the same way back to him. She told her kid to shut up because here she was trying to stand up for her family and her kid is saying they were wrong lol. To be honest if I was her I'd probably tell the kid to shut up too.

It's a pride thing. I don't see how anyone can take a side in this. Both sides are being so dumb. Making chaos out of nothing at all.

    -edit-

I originally thought he said crackers but I just watched again and I think she was eating noodles. still though -_- it's just food. sweep it away. it's no where close to enough damage where this kind of reaction is necessary.

    Just my two cents, but...

In terms of legality, the MTR does have a rule (publicly stated) that no food or drink is allowed. Violating that is probably just a breach of contract (terms of passage as provided by tendering payment of fare) between the rider and the MTR company, and the violator can be ejected off of MTR property.

That said, when one is talking about people's personalities, then other issues may surface that have nothing really to do with the original "offense" but do play a role in the eventual outcome of the incident. There are legions of people around the world who take special pleasure in publicly pointing out the deficiencies of others and sometimes, it takes very little to set them off. For those that are so afflicted, the minute they spot something "wrong" they will be the first to speak up, and loudly, as it gives them immense personal satisfaction to call attention to the wrongdoing of another. They savor a sense of self deserving heroism and look to the surrounding crowd for validation of their deed. In this case, I think this was the original impetus, or if you will, spark, that ignited the controversy.

But, in this case, the offending party not only didn't cower or slink away in shame (as perhaps the person who outed them had hoped) but instead came back full force with a verbal assault of her own. This then forced the original commenter to either put up or shut up. IMHO, not wanting to appear a nosy foolish busybody (which was exactly what he was, BTW), he had to continue to stick to his "righteous" clamoring and escalate the event by bringing an "official" on board to justify his original indignation.

Frankly, Hong Kong's MTR is probably one of the cleanest and user friendly rapid transit systems in the world. To me, bitching about people eating there is like a kid getting a 99.9 on an exam, and his mother decries his performance because she felt he should have scored at least 100. There comes a point of diminishing returns here (New York's subways have legions of rats that feed on user food garbage so I'm familiar with how bad the other end of the spectrum can get). The other issue apparent to me is, despite the fact that the woman is obviously in the legal wrong, I don't think we should be so quick to malign her over this. Anyone who has ever had to take a bunch of young children on a subway knows there are probably many other things going through her head at that time (ie. keeping them all together in one place, making sure you don't miss your stop, ensuring that they don't get injured or lost, et cetera). If they were sitting together quietly eating and thus too occupied to get into more trouble; as a parent, I understand that perfectly.

Obviously, this entire episode triggered another prevailing undercurrent of HK social life, that is the distinction between HK and mainlander that has been the source of much discontent for years. HK'ers have loathed these northerners that, despite their new found wealth, they're very much the same unwashed hillbilly that they had always had been. Of course, the official northern response was to sidestep the obvious infraction of the northern woman, but to attempt to take what may seem to be the high road (by invoking a "scholarly response") which in this case, came off exactly as the politically motivated hack that it was.

As for the politically moralizing Chinese "scholar" whose thrust was to make this into an anti-western rant? See, that's exactly what living under a repressive political system does to even men of learning. IMHO, he's probably the biggest loser of the bunch. I mean, which would one rather be; a sloppy housewife with a bunch of messy kids, a nosy neighbor who comments pointedly about others, or a man who has dedicated his entire life to academics but has to use his life's work to fall upon the sword of politics?

why be so surprised, we humans are quite hateful by nature. if we are not in a position to hate and look down on another ethnic group we will find small differences amongst ourselves to feed our pride and hatred.
