Kudos to ESPN for immediately recognizing this as exactly what it is...

I think that this is a watershed moment, showing the world that, despite the writer's ignorance, ingrained anti-Chinese racism remains extant.

Yet, there are still pplz who supported the Ex-Espn emplyee saying that, oh, it wasnt intended...

When Jlin helps the team win, he's American...when he's not, he's a chink...ironic isnt it?

Max bretos was scolded by his asian wife...she probably gave him a fly swatter beating...the old chinese style!!

There will always be racism in America. chink in the armour thing is going a bit far, how they did that thinking it wouldn't cause offence is strange. Its almost as bad as the 3 inches of pleasure comment i read about earlier this week.

Well that guy got 30 days paid leave, sweet deal.

That guy must have thought he was clever.

Good thing the ESPN management seems to be somewhat competent.

^ im pretty sure ive heard racist comments from you in the past so im not sure why you are complaining. As i say to my friends who say racist things about other groups, *when it comes back on you, don't cry about it cus you're just as bad.

*Im not talking about you in particular as it may be someone else im thinking of but if it was you (I could check past posts but i really cant be bothered, long day at work, time to chill out) then the above applies to you also.

The term racism is used far too loosely.

^ I agree, i have seen people who are probably ignorant or overestimate their wit, but no actual racist who hates or wishes bad on him because he is asian.

What's really ironic about all this is, that many Chinese here regularly reference Japanese as 'Jap' this, or 'Jap' that; and don't realize that to someone that is Japanese, it is almost as stinging an insult as 'chink' is to us Chinese. In this regard, I think the writer really did believe that he was just being totally clever and would get a pat on the back by his editor for the 'nice' play on words. Of course little did he realize just how lame assed parochial he was; now at the cost of his job.

What's also interesting to me about this is, how the press is frankly ignoring the undercurrents of "Damn, is it really that bad to call them that (ie. chinks), I've been doing that all my life?" that is a silent but sizable group within the US (and too, the international) population. I guess, this was a watershed moment in that mainstream America is finally waking up to having to be civil the Chinese living amongst them. However, we Chinese can be just as blindly ignorant, and indeed, racist as the worst of them.

    Chink in the Armor

A vulnerable area, as in Putting things off to the last minute is the chink in Pat's armor and is bound to get her in trouble one day . This term relies on chink in the sense of "a crack or gap," a meaning dating from about 1400 and used figuratively since the mid-1600s.

Like da-uh, we know that, and NIGGARDLY means miserly; yeah, right.

There are those who will blindly maintain that the phrase (Chink in the armor) is an innocent double entendre, and that Asians, especially Chinese, shouldn't get into such a huff over it. However, the majority of the English speaking population is already in agreement that in making such a personal choice to use the word in the first place, it revealed the user to be socially insensitive, politically inept, and potentially a huge liability, especially for a company that sells its product via use of language as a communications medium. That's why he (the writer) lost his job. And for those who still maintain that the writer was right, I suggest walking into a Jewish enclave with a Swastika festooned on your clothing and inform residents there that its just an ancient Hindi religious symbol; try convincing them of that. You'll be dead before you reach the end of the street.

Moral of this story is, you can't play with people's emotions; 'niggardly' linguistically has become a dead word, and pretty much too has 'chink in the armor' because of their unfortunate proximity to politically dangerous themes. It would be akin to wearing red and showing up at a Chinese funeral.

    Have a freaking cry...

We can be racist to other race, but we throw a fit when our race gets attacked.

If there's a joke that you can make on other race, there's a joke that can be made to your own race.

Racism has been around for awhile. Stop complaining. I mean look at black people.
