I'm curious, does anyone on PA actively invest in the stock market? I've recently taken control over all of my finances and 50% of my savings are now in my discount brokerage. After my first month I cleared a few hundred dollars in profits with swing trades and short term positions. I like the idea of making money in this fashion, however the risk is very high when approaching stocks with significant volatility. I'll continue to play with this, but I don't intend to risk more than 2500 dollars a time on volatile stocks. I am playing a very risky game with 2x and 3x leveraged ETFs and understand there is a huge potential to get burned. -boat Right now I've been looking into good long term equity... After a ton of research I ended up putting money into a couple ETF's and mutual funds: iShares Hong Kong, iShares REIT, iShares Diversified Monthly Income, CI Signature Income Fund and TD Canadian Bond Fund. I also hold various shares in oil, mining and finance companies. This thread might bomb... I am uncertain of PA's interest in the topic, and the age bracket for this kind of thing is probably a little higher than PA's average user base. Feel free to post your thoughts on the topic, if any; if you have well thought out investment strategies or if you have had investments which have served you well in the past :eat:
I have about 10k (depending on the market's up and down) in the stock market. I love the stock market; but usually withdraw when it's more than 10k to go into IRAs. Used to be short term trader ... have been busy lately with work though, so, have been in a more stable stocks with high dividend returns. As for ETFs, bonds, indices etc; i usually leave it for my retirement (401k, etc) fund to invest in those.
its all about YGE or LVS! lol bro use to buy and a few of my friends try to teach me... scared to play i dont got the gwop to risk-sweat
If you had bought LVS a while back you could have made an incredible amount of money... Right now my picks are KORS and SIRI. Kors has a great balance sheet and I think it has a ton of potential left in marketing to a growing Asian market. I wish I had gotten in on it's IPO, but even so, I can see it hitting 65-70 a share by the end of 2012. Sirius looks like its going to be acquired by Liberty Media. I anticipate it will be $3.00 by the end of this year and possibly up to 4.50 by 2013 barring nothing too crazy happens.
I'm not so much in the stock market... but I do have shares in bank of america and Citi group, i have been looking into investing in silver... i just need it to drop to 32.50/oz and I will buy 100oz of silver to keep... hopefully I don't miss the uptrend...
Sure! I was mostly thinking stocks, but real estate is a great way to produce monthly income through an investment as well. I haven't looked into real estate much yet myself... the initial capital cost is too high, but at some point I would like to own a few condos for rent. I think I will wait another 4-5 years to get into real estate. 30 is a good age to start buying rental properties imo. Are you looking into buying a place and renting it out in Toronto?
^ you should be able to find some budget condos in the city that could be solely used as rent.... you can definitely make up a quick profit if you have the money upfront.... I am going to buying properties well before I hit 30.... got 5-6 years till then... and i expect to be buying a multi family home by the end of summer.
Haha yeah, Facebook recently (probably 2months now) floated into the stock market so people can buy shares. 1 share of Apple is probably £££/$$$ though! Best to buy shares when the business is new and you're confident that it will rise and shine to the top!
just make sure u have time and remember whats in your portfolio i went o/s to work and i forgot what i had, and then next thing u know... stock mergers, and some go into admin >.< now i don't even bother looking at whats there lol
My smartphone keeps me up to date on all my stocks... plus I have a mint.com widget so I can always track my finances from one screen on my phone. Technology is amazing if you use it right. -woot2
I was gonna start looking into Forex tbh... i did stock trading maybe 8-10yrs ago (yeah started young), but then the tides turned on the economy so I stayed out... I used to use Mint, but since i'm outside the US now, can't =/
A few shares tied up in Oil and Gas companies. Can't complain about the return. No active trading at the moment. Just can't get in the time.
didn't help i started pre gfc that hurt hard so now i decided to splurge instead... least i still have something at the end of it =P hahahaha but i do think investing is a wise idea, if you know what ur getting urself into and have exit strategies when it doesn't go to plan make a bit, then u can upgrade ur car =D
sweet I do, in minerals especially and you either make a killing or a GG. Are you a day trader or what? what method do you use to analyse e.g. past trend or research the company entirely lol.
