After 6 years my Toshiba Laptop died. Now I am planning for a replacement for it. I think it's time for me to try something new, I am looking for something portable, which I can use for some PS and general day to day stuff. Now there are two models from Apple I am interested in.

    Air 13" with 128GB SSD for £1099
    or
    Pro 13" with 2.4GHz for £999

Any suggestions? Anyone has those models?

  2. i'd go macbook pro... but then again if it were my choice I wouldn't get either and actually go for the new gen of 13" windows notebooks. i7, 4-8GB ram, 128/256 SSD.. probably around the same price or cheaper

I've thought about this for a while actually.

I'm currently using a 13" MBP which I purchased 3 years ago. I was looking into these options because I wanted to know which one to get immediately if my current one ever goes and my conclusion is that the Mac Book Air is the better option for me... with a few caveats.

I would choose the regular 13" MBP if I didn't have a desktop, not having a disc drive to burn music is an annoying loss.
Also, a 128 gb SSD isn't enough space if you are using the laptop as your only computer. Fortunately, I have 2 other desktops, so space isn't an issue.

Thus... If I didn't have my homebuilt desktop workstation, I would definitely be going for the regular 13" or even the 15".

You have to figure out what you'll be using the laptop for primarily. If its your only computer then I'd recommend the pro over the air. If its just a lighter use/travel machine, then definitely go for the Air.

If you don't need a CD/DVD drive.. get the MacBook Air.. but if you need bigger storage, stay away from MacBook Air since SSD upgrades are expensive for them. 128gb won't be able hold a lot.

Thanks for your help. After doing some more research I think the best thing to do is to get the pro version. I do have 3 desktop pc at home, but I also want to use ps on the go, so the extra power of the pro is beneficial for me. The main reason for me is the non upgrade able ram on the air. 4 gb is not that much, with couple of apps running it will hit the limit. I will upgrade the pro to 8gb ram and replace the SuperDrive with a second hdd, most likely ssd.

I had this exact same decision when i was buying and i ended up with a MBP since the air just seems like I might snap it sooner or later and its hard to upgrade storage.

  7. good call between the two.... the air is really for mobility... and not as a main computer.... but i would rather use an iPad for mobile browsing....

I set my mind with the MBP now, will get it for Christmas. With help of a friend who is still a university student I will also get it 15% cheaper. The money I saved will be spent on 2x4GB Corsair memory and a Speck case.
Will keep you up to date.

i would say great choice but im not a mac user but with specs and price its a better choice. i like windows and windows would always provide the hardware and software i need to make my computers with a dual boot of os x and ubuntu.

Neither am I a mac user, but I think it comes pretty handy if u can handle more os. I think it's gonna pretty tough to get one by Saturday, Westfield London and other apple stores are so packed with hardcore shoppers....unbelievable.

If you're looking for portability... definitely go for the air, it's light, sexy and it's fast because it uses a SSD. MBP is a bit heavy unless you don't plan to carry it around all the time.

If you want to stick with Windows but want the thinness/portability of a Mac Air.. you can check out the new Asus Zenbook.
