Police in Rhode Island say a 14-year-old driver is responsible for a bad accident in Providence that killed a 9-year-old girl and left others, including an infant, in serious condition.

The accident happened on 10 North around 3 p.m. on Saturday.

According to police, the teen was allegedly driving a stolen van along 10 South when he drove across the median onto 10 North, just south of Westminster Road. Police who were following the van were only a few cars back when the teen took off.

The teen broadsided a Nissan Centra on 10 North. Five people were inside the car -- a man, woman, a 13-year-old, a 9-year-old girl and an infant. Police say the 9-year-old was killed on impact. The teen the woman, who was driving, and the infant are all in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital. The man in the car was also transported, but is fine.

The teen driver was also hurt in the crash. He is listed in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

The van was stolen from the Nickerson Community Center. Police are not sure when it was taken.
