Police are hunting for a woman in China who ruthlessly gouged out a 6-year-old boy’s eyes and left him blind. The young child was discovered by his parents in a field near his home in Shanxi province in the nation’s northeast region on Saturday, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency. The boy told authorities he was approached by the unidentified woman and lured out into the open field, the report said. She spoke with a foreign accent and asked the child if anyone at his home played mahjong. She then ripped out the child’s eyes with some kind of tool, according to the Beijing Times newspaper. His parents discovered him hours later, covered in blood. His eyeballs were discovered nearby. He was rushed to a local hospital, but then transfered to Shanxi Eye Hospital in Taiyuan the following day. Doctors could not save his eyesight, the Xinhua news agency said. Authorities are offering a reward of 100,000 yuan ($16,300) for information leading to the woman’s capture. The boy’s mother, identified as Wang Wenli, told Xinhua she couldn’t understand why anyone would want to do this to her child. “We had no disputes with anybody,” she said, according to the news agency. Reports in China indicated the corneas were removed from the eyeballs, sparking speculation the attack was linked to black market organ trafficking.
