72-year-old delivering Xmas cards murdered

KITCHENER, Ont. — Police in Kitchener, Ont., are waiting for autopsy results as they continue their hunt for whoever attacked a 72-year-old man out delivering Christmas cards Saturday afternoon.

Waterloo region police say the autopsy on Hunter Brown was being done in Hamilton and it was not immediately known if a weapon was used.

The killer struck as Brown performed his annual ritual of delivering seasonal cards to neighbours’ mailboxes just a few steps from his home.

He was found bleeding and unconscious and was pronounced dead in hospital.

Police call it a “vicious assault.”

Witnesses say a man in a black tuque and long black coat was seen fleeing the neighbourhood on foot.

“It is a very tragic story; it was a vicious assault,” police spokesman Olaf Heinzel said Monday.

“It’s very disturbing for our community.”

Brown and his wife, Beverly, had lived in their two-storey home for more than 30 years.

“He was a peaceful man,” Dieter Engelmann, who lives next to the couple, told the Waterloo Region Record.

“If someone asked him for money, he never said ‘no’. Why would anyone do that to him?”

Engelmann couldn’t believe the attack happened in the middle of the day, in the middle of the street.

Police were canvassing homes and businesses in the “fairly large neighbourhood” in hopes someone might have seen something.

“Our focus right now is trying to find out what happened,” Heinzel said. “We are focused on trying to identify a possible suspect.”

Ken Summers, who has known the couple for 25 years, said he went outside as police and emergency crews arrived. An unconscious Brown was found lying on his back, Summers said.

“He didn’t have a single enemy,” the neighbour said.
