I am not from HK, but Malaysia. Heard a lot about this stories from the TV. Also, heard many of them regret migrating there because of the 'slow' lifestyle. Some even came back to HK (eg Dodo Cheng) Is that true?
not sure what the percentage was, but yes, some have returned, like some celebs, because there is more money to be made. sometimes they commute back and forth from say Vancouver Canada to HK....still keeping their homes in canada, for just in case. one of my aunts moved back to HK, after 3-4 years in Vancouver. She found it boring there.
Everyone was afraid of what would happen to HK back in 1997, so they moved away as fast as possible. Since HK people live in a rapid and fast changing lifestyle, many have returned to HK because they feel more comfortable living in these conditions.
From what I can see, if you have the money, you can have homes all over the globe...and you can call it home wherever you like.
Everyone from my mom's side of the family moved to Australia and some to New York due to the "97-scare." No regrets they said as they are now living off of land that they paid for and own.
Ya my parents are fairly happy in Canada. It seems kind of counter-productive to be moving back and forth to me.
My mum to this day after over a decade here in Sydney says she'd much prefer to go back to Hong Kong, and I agree with her. There is not a lot to do for the Hongkie here besides K'. Its suprising how I'm still able to resist to be changed completely by the ABC culture.
well cos u always tend to stick to some part of ur own culture. though this is a matter of opinion and its ur own decision which culture u prefer though if ur parents were mixed and u lived in canada then perhaps u would have been suited to the canadian culture more.
A lot of people become "astronaut people" (commute back and forth to do business, while their families remain in North America). Others just stay long enough to get their citizenship then leave. Often, however, the younger generation remains for the education, etc. The thing that bugs me the most is when people leave, then come back to get benefits (e.g., education, healthcare).
well thats the wise thing for them to do. they aren't stupid and they were prob thinking about the benefits before they moved and those were the reasons for why they prob moved.
This is very true. I have lots of friends whose families came here in the early 90s, a little before '97, and they were born here or spent a little of their childhood here (in Canada). But seeing that nothing "bad" really happened after '97, a lot of them returned to HK, and are now back again, to take advantage of their dual citizenship (ie. cheap education).
